Looking For A Good Coat? 5 Styles You’ll Wear All Winter

A great coat is the best investment piece you can make for your wardrobe — hands down! Many years ago, fresh out of college, I landed my first job as a Nordstrom coat buyer. Two days later, it was off to New York City to preview coats and jackets for the fall season. It was a very exciting time; I got to experience New York in the 90s, and truly enjoyed every minute of it! That was the start of a lifelong affair with coats … and I still love them to this day.

Remember, everyone sees your coat. Keep in mind, when you’re out and about town running errands, attending sporting events, going out to dinner – everyone sees you in your outerwear. Sometimes whatever’s underneath doesn’t really matter! Always make your coats stylish but practical, and don’t be afraid to purchase several. Trust me, you’ll wear them all.

Today’s post is about 5 coats that’ll keep you warm all winter. I’m showing you everything, from the luxury detail that makes your coat look more expensive, to the classic trench, to an everyday peacoat. Remember, the earlier you buy it, the more wearing time you’ll get. And, since we’re at the beginning of the season, now is the time to add a few fun ones to your collection!

Style tip: When it comes to a wool coat, look for this one detail that instantly elevates your look: double-faced wool. Double-faced wool coats are luxurious, and they look very expensive. The iconic brand, Max Mara, makes some of the most beautiful coats you’ll ever see. Believe me, if your budget allows, it’s worth the splurge. However, there are many options at much lower prices. Last year, I purchased this Mango one, and my friend in the Nordstrom tailor shop thought it was a Max Mara! And today, I filmed this save/splurge video with two beautiful brown coats — one is $136 and the other $575. It’s hard to tell the difference!

#1 Barbour Jacket

THIS is the coat everyone is buzzing about, and now the classic UK country coat is cool again! I purchased a cropped J.Crew one, along with the best-selling Barbour one. It’s classic and super easy to style.

#2 Moncler Lightweight Quilted Jacket

If there’s ONE jacket I actually wear the most, it’s this one. It was a splurge, but the cost per wear is low since I’ve worn it non-stop for three years in a row. It layers nicely over a cashmere hoodie, it’s comfortable, packs well, and even works tied around your waist if you get too hot. There are other affordable versions which I’ll list below.

#3 Shorter Peacoat

Lately, I’ve been seeing shorter peacoats everywhere. And just yesterday, while shopping at Nordstrom, I came home with this new Vince one that happens to be on a limited-time sale. There are many options here, everything from a splurge Fleurette style to J.Crew.

#4 Trench coat

If there’s one coat you’ll wear all the time, it’s a longer, slightly oversized trench coat. One of these days, I might upgrade to a Burberry style — but for now, this $99 one by Orolay is perfect! It’s roomy enough to layer over a cashmere hoodie, and the color goes with everything. Highly recommend.

#5 Classic Wool Coat

Classic wool coats are always in style, and if you invest in something you love, you’ll have it for years. Right now, longer and slightly oversized styles are super stylish, and brands like Vince, Theory, Max Mara and Reiss have amazing options. A camel coat is another beautiful classic, and looks luxurious no matter what price you pay! You’ll wear a wool coat all winter long.
