Summer Denim: 6 Styles To Try Now!

This past week, our weather miraculously went from non-stop rain to summer-like weather in the 80s. When you live in the PNW, the weather is always a hot topic, and we’re often complaining 😂 So, when I happened to check the forecast ahead of Mother’s Day Weekend, I was so excited to see ten days of all sunshine! Talk about a great way to put everyone in a good mood 🤍

Since summer is right around the corner,  it’s time to think about denim and all the cute outfits that revolve around summer staples like white denim, shorts, denim dresses and skirts. There are many brand new pieces arriving every single day, and I’m excited to share some updated outfit inspo with all of you.

Today’s post is about 6 styles to try now, just in time for summer! Right now, Nordstrom has the very best selection of denim, as well as everything else you need to make current, everyday outfits. Keep reading to see trending styles, how to wear them, and why keeping your denim updated is so so important! And don’t miss the “Refresher” section below, it has some good denim recommendations. There’s a pro-tip below about finding jeans you love. I hope you find post this helpful 💙

Susie’s favorite denim outfits

Left: Pink t-shirt | Denim skirt, similar | Middle: White tee | Paige jeans | Right: Holly jacket | White jeans

Denim skirts are so stylish, and I’m loving knee length ones like this new button front style that just arrived

This season, I’m leaning toward longer length jeans. This faded blue jean is by Paige, and it’s a best seller you’ll wear all season long

For a more relaxed style, these by Rag & Bone feel current but not so oversized – and they’re best sellers

Refresher: Denim Mistakes You Could Be Making, But Don’t Need To

#1 – Washing them to “shrink” them back to the right size. I often hear this, and the first thing I automatically think is that was size was wrong to begin with

#2 – Not getting alterations. Nordstrom alters hundreds of jeans every single day, and there was rarely a customer I helped for whom we didn’t call a tailor. This is the biggest key to making sure your jeans fit properly. I wouldn’t t let my clients leave the dressing room without getting alterations 😉

#3 – Putting them in the dryer. This is a big no-no!! The heat breaks down the fibers (assuming there’s stretch in the fabric), and over time you’ll get puckering. There’s one exception, and that’s with white denim. I recommend washing them inside out, then laying them flat to dry.

#4 – Not purchasing the correct size. Typically, I see jeans that are too big because they’ve stretched out. Of course, it depends on the stretch in the fabric. But, in the dressing room, we always explained that jeans stretch out about a 1/2 size. I always say purchase them tight, but not too tight!

#5 – Washing too frequently. Only wash your denim when you must. This is according to every premium denim brand out there. I tell my clients to try to NOT wash your jeans. One sales rep years ago suggested airing them out if they need a little freshening up!

Navy and pink is a stylish combo right now. Look at this button-up and this oversized sweatshirt

You can never go wrong with stripes, and this new top is so cute! Pair with écru denim in this style

Cool accessories like this tote, these sandals and this straw bag are ones you’ll wear on repeat

Which denim to buy: The pro-tip you’ll want to know

So … what’s the pro-tip? Stick to the top sellers!  If you purchase best-sellers, then you’re pretty much guaranteed to find a grat pair or two. Why? Because the top sellers fit most everyone well, they’re on trend, and they get great reviews. And, denim brands do a lot of research and design their jeans accordingly.

The #1 jean that updates your summer denim collection

L’Agence tweed jacket | Veronica Beard top | rag & bone Sofie | Slingback | Bag | Earrings

Right now, wide-leg jeans are everywhere, and it’s the single most important style for the season! The good news is that there are many styles to choose from, including cropped versions like this Paige one and full length styles like these. If you’re 5’4″ or under, there are petite options available, like this and this. See below for more favorites!

Which is best: white or écru?

Rag & Bone top | Sweater | Paige Anessa | Tote | Birkenstocks

This time of year, I believe every closet should have a white jean option, whether it’s bright white or écru. If your budget allows, go for both! I wear white more often, but écru looks a bit more sophisticated, and I love it when it’s paired with black. No matter which option you choose, keep it sophisticated with raffia accessories.

Denim skirts are trending – find your best length

L’Agence cardigan | Cami | Denim skirt | Slingback | Bag | Perfume | Earrings

This is another easy update that you’ll wear all season long. Right now, all lengths are trending (which makes it easy!). Midi style skirts are still going strong, but now I’m seeing knee lengths similar to what’s on the board above, as well as shorter mini styles. They all look amazing with flat sandals or sneakers, casual t-shirts and lightweight jackets. Of course, dress them up with lady jackets, nicer blouses and heeled sandals — so chic.

Denim dresses

Vince cardigan | Cinq à Sept dress | Earrings | Bag | Sandals | Gucci Flora

Denim dresses are plentiful this season, but I’m noticing that they’re selling quickly! They’re really easy to wear, and ideal as we move into warmer months. Look at this Rails one, this slimmer one by Frame, and this longer style.

Denim jackets: a closet staple

Jacket | Cinq à Sept dress | Gucci wedges | Bracelet | Bag

Everyone needs a denim jacket — I can’t imagine a wardrobe without one! Since different lengths work with different outfits, I suggest a slightly oversized one like this AG one, and a slimmer, shorter style like this. If your budget allows, look at adding a black one or even écru for added outfit options.

Denim shorts – now is the time to grab a pair!

It’s short season, and I love the look of a faded, worn-in pair of denim shorts, Birkenstocks and a casual t-shirt. The AGOLDE Parker is a top seller every year, and so is the Paige Dani and this one too. If you love shorts, now is the time to grab a pair … just in time for summer!
