Here They Are: 5 Simple Tips To Dress Better This Fall

Every year when the seasons change, many of us find getting dressed … a bit tricky! Just this week, our weather shifted overnight, and now I’m starting to think more seriously about my own fall outfits. Given all the clothes hanging on my rack, you wouldn’t think it would be a problem (!!) but I struggle too sometimes! I think it’s safe to say that many of us want easy, everyday outfit combos. So, after decades of helping women one-on-one and seeing firsthand what works and what doesn’t, I’ve put together 5 simple styling tips to help us all dress better this fall.

Below you’ll find some new outfit inspo, along with a few style tricks that will help with easy outfit-making. We’re talking simple concepts, like wearing a matching top and jacket, or matching your accessories. You’ll find that as long as you own these essentials, the outfit possibilities are endless. Keep reading to see my new style boards using easy pro-tips that I recommend from decades of experience in the dressing room … those were happy years for me!

Pro tip: Tidy up your closet! If you’re considering a closet clean out, I highly recommend starting with this rolling rack. It’s a total game changer, whether you’re editing your closet, packing for trip or just making outfits. When you can see everything in front of you, everything falls into place! 🌟

#1 Every outfit starts with the right bottom piece

J.Crew coat | Stripe sweater | Coated jeans | YSL Paris bag | SW boots | Scarf

I’ve been saying this for years … and it’s true! No matter what time of year it is, the right bottom piece is the starting point of every outfit. So, when styles change (like now), it’s important to make sure you have a few updated go-to’s in your closet. This season, I’m suggesting long length denim: wide-leg styles, flares, and slim, straight leg styles.

Black pants are another must-have wardrobe staple — look for trousers and longer length styles. Once that is done, then adding a versatile shoe or boots will allow you to proceed with everything else. In other words, EVERY sweater, jacket or coat should work on top!

#2 Begin with a base layer

J.Crew coat | Ecru sweater | Ecru jean | Gucci scarf | Brown suede bag | Gucci loafers | Bracelet

This is one of the easiest ways to make endless outfits! If you start with a base layer (same color top and bottom), then almost every jacket works, and you’ll have outfits for all occasions. Suggested base layer ideas for this time of year include: black/black, écru/écru, gray/gray or camel/camel. Easy, quick and elegant.

#3 Three Color Rule

Wool coat | Sweater | Jeans | Boots | Burberry scarf | Earrings | Tod’s bag

The “three color rule” concept has been around for years, and is a stylist back pocket favorite. It’s having a resurgence again on TikTok, and everyone is taking notice! Here’s an example: If you’re wearing a black and soft ivory outfit, try adding a contrasting handbag. Right away the outfit becomes elegant and sophisticated. Keep reading below for other ways to bring three colors into your outfits.

#4 Match your top and jacket

Camel coat | Camel sweater | Frame jeans | Boots | Leopard bag

Here’s another stylist trick I learned in the dressing room. When you find a jacket you love in a color besides black, try adding a matching layering piece in the same color or tone. For example, if you find a camel jacket, look for a camel sweater or camel something to layer underneath. Then, you can wear dark jeans or faded jeans, black jeans or trousers, écru … you get the idea 😉 There’s no better way to achieve an elevated look than by matching your top and jacket. Trust me!

#5 Coordinate your accessories

Trench coat | Bing tee | Frame cardigan | Jeans | Sneakers | Scarf | Coach bag

Here’s one of my favorite tips: neutral accessories are the perfect finishing touch to every outfit. So, if you can match or coordinate your accessories (by color or pattern), you’ll have dozens of easy outfits at your fingertips! So, try to put together a few sets: a bag/shoe combo, a bag/belt combo, or a scarf/bag/shoe combo in matching or coordinating colors. I love any accessory in a rich saddle brown, a lighter beige color, or black of course — that goes without saying!
