The Ultimate Packing List: 12 must-haves for your next trip

When I was a little girl (aged 4 and 5), I traveled to England — alone — to spend the summer with my grandparents. This life-changing experience ingrained in me a love of travel that has become part of who I am. Those were courageous decisions by my parents, and I’m so grateful for their foresight! Because of those trips, I established a deep connection to my grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins — all of whom still live in the UK. I’ve tried to continue this tradition with my kids, and we’re lucky to have taken many family trips to Europe.

Some exciting news from So Susie!

In a couple of weeks, the new So Susie website is launching! In the new Travel Hub section, you’ll see what I’ve found during my exciting adventures. I can’t wait to share it with you!

Today’s post gives you a handy packing list with the 12 must-haves you need in order to make travel easy and effortless. I’ve referred to this list on many occasions, especially since I traveled more in 2023 than I ever have — almost monthly! All the items I discovered along the way are below, like the black scarf I take on every single trip, or the Beis Weekender bag that holds a crazy amount of necessities. I even tried 15 days in a carry-on … which didn’t really work for me – hah! And, the biggest game changer of all? Compression packing cubes 😌 Keep reading to get a few ideas for your next trip, no matter where you’re going. Happy travels!

Susie’s ultimate packing list: 12 must-have favorites

Susie’s outfit: Rag & Bone blazer | Mother Dazzler jeans | Luggage | Naghedi tote | Fendi bag | Gucci loafers

Top row: Trench coat | Graphic tee | AG Jeans | Rag & Bone blazer | Middle row: Varley 1/2 zip | Vince cashmere sweater | Stripe sweater | Black jeans | Bottom row: Varley pant | Burberry bucket bag | Chelsea boot | Adidas | Moncler vest

A trench coat is a key staple for all your travels, and this Favorite Daughter style is a great option. Or, if you prefer one with a hood, look at this J.Crew one — I have it myself and love it. And, for a slightly oversized style, look at this $98 one by Orolay. I have this one as well and wear it all the time.

This graphic tee is cute, and is a great layering piece for pretty much everything. Same with the Vince cashmere weekend sweater — it’s a basic I’ve had for years, and it still looks good. If you love a French girl aesthetic, look at this new striped sweater by Cinq A Sept. And, if you tie either sweater over your shoulders, it will give you some warmth — but you’ll look cool 😉

This AG faded blue jean is a current fave, and so is this Mother Hustler in black. They both look great with pretty much anything! If you want a comfy travel set, this Varley 1/2 zip and the matching pant are the best.

For jacket options, this Rag & Bone blazer is ideal for travel since it’s a knit style and it’s comfortable. Bonus: you’ll also get the look and polish of a blazer. Of course, a lightweight puffer vest is also handy to take on a trip since it hardly takes up any room in your suitcase. In my opinion, this Moncler one is the ultimate — it is so good!

Highly recommend the Adidas Sambas sneakers for travel; they’re comfortable, and I’ve been wearing mine everywhere for months. This new Chelsea boot is updated and casual and just plain cool looking. Of course, I always bring a versatile bag to carry my phone, water, snacks and travel essentials. This Burberry Bucket bag is practical and it adds a little pattern to your outfits!

Travel gear that actually works

Susie’s outfit: Cashmere wrap | Eileen Fisher black pant | Gucci bucket bag | YSL sandals | Beis Weekender

Top row: Jewelry travel case | Paravel luggage | Burberry scarf | Middle row: Cosmetics bag | Air tag case | Beis Weekender | Bottom row: Packing cubes | Passport case | Luggage tag

These packing cubes are my #1 must-have while traveling, and they’re essential for staying organized while packing. I also thought these pink ones were a nice change.

Beis Weekender Bags sell out almost instantly and for good reason … they’re amazing! I use mine as a carry-on (it has a special trolley strap to slide on top of your suitcase), or for a quick weekend getaway.

This is my favorite makeup organizer. I take it on every trip because it’s easy to carry, and it keeps all your makeup and skincare products in one place and easy to see.

This scarf acts as a mini blanket on the plane — it’s cute too! For a black scarf, this is the one I take on every vacation, no matter what time of year it is.

Lastly, I love these monogrammed jewelry cases and travel tags by Mark & Graham. They all come in many different colors, and you can customize them to your liking. And these days, everyone should get an Apple AirTag, you never know when you might need it!

Favorite hotel in Mexico: One and Only Palmilla

The One and Only Resort in Palmilla is all the things: beautifully designed, elegant but casual, offering some of the best customer service I’ve ever encountered on vacation. Everyone is genuinely friendly here, which makes for an even better stay. The pools have breathtaking views of the ocean, and the hacienda-style architecture makes you feel like you’re in Cabo from another era. There are bikes available all over the property, and we’ve used them everyday to ride to the pool. I’ll definitely be back since it’s the perfect place to work, then have a cocktail and relax. I’m currently writing this post while sitting in a comfy wicker pool chair. So grateful to be here! ☀️
