How to Make Your Outfits Look Expensive (Nordstrom Sale Picks Inside)

One of the things I love most about my job is helping all of you build the very best wardrobes — ones that you’ll love for years to come! After decades of helping women in the dressing room and seeing seeing firsthand what works and what doesn’t, I’ve put together some insider stylist tips, like how to make your outfits look expensive. There are certain items that instantly add sophistication and elegance to any outfit. And, while they don’t need to be expensive, it doesn’t hurt if they look like they are!

There are many great pieces that feel “designer” but cost a fraction of the price. This is the art of high/low dressing, and chances are many of the fashion girls that catch your eye on Instagram or Pinterest have this mastered.

Today’s post is about 6 ways to make your outfits look more expensive. There’s a mix of some Nordstrom Anniversary sale items, along with other pieces I think you’ll like. Keep reading for a little street style inspo, and check out my new style boards for outfit ideas. Cheers! 🥂

Loving these shades of brown – this faux fur is so good, and same with this leopard jacket

White boots are surprisingly versatile, and these are super cute

Classic trench coats are a closet staple, and you can find lots of options on sale here

#1 Add Leather or Faux Leather

Left: Leather jacket | Tank | Paige Sasha | Leopard tote | Sunglasses | Earrings | BootsRight: Cinq a Sept jacket | Sweater | Mother Insider | Earrings | Shoes | Bag

Faux leather is a wardrobe classic at this point, and good faux can easily pass for real leather — but at a fraction of the cost. Find a piece or two you love, and wear it all the time — you’ll definitely look stylish! And honestly, these days you’d never know faux leather isn’t the real thing.

#2 Of Course, All Black

All black. It always, always elevates. Your outfit will appear more elegant and expensive, even if you scored a deal. Wear all black any time of year; it looks great with literally everything! Here are some favorite staples I highly recommend.

#3 Current Denim

Left: Trench | Cinq a Sept tee | Mother Insider jeans | Scarf | Sneakers | Naghedi toteRight: Trench | Button-up | Paige Anessa | White clutch | Boots | Earrings

Denim has been a specialty of mine for over two decades, and I believe that investing in a few go-to styles is the key to making all your outfits work. Pro tip: Make sure the wash and fit are current. Try dressing up your favorite denim by adding a blazer and strappy sandals — an easy combo that always looks good together. New styles roll in every day, and the brands I gravitate toward most are Frame, Mother, Paige, and AG.

#4 Blazers/Jackets

A blazer (regular or oversized) is the finishing piece to many stylish outfits, so think of it more like a jacket. Wear a blazer with a tee and denim shorts, with all your favorite jeans, and over dresses too. So chic!

#5 Add Anything Camel

Left: Vince jacket | Top | Paige Sasha jeans | Madewell tote | Scarf | Staud Wally boots | Right: Sam Edelman coat | Paige top | Paige Anessa jeans | Byredo | Boots | Madewell bag

Which color instantly adds sophistication and elegance to any outfit? Camel! No matter the time of year, camel always elevates your look. If you prefer to not wear camel around your face, try a trouser. Don’t forget, simple accessories can do the trick as well.

#6 Elevated Accessories

You really don’t need to spend a lot to get a really nice belt, a stylish handbag, or trendy jewelry. Accessories complete your outfit and make you feel put-together and ready to go! Pick up some new ones to update your fall wardrobe, like this tote. It’s a great piece that makes a big difference 😉
