7 Ways to Master Winter Style In The City
… what to wear when it’s raining, cloudy, or just plain cold
Since winter officially started 10 days ago, I decided to review my closet to see which items I’ll be wearing on repeat. Of course, this required a bit of “blog research” 😉 and I’m excited to share my findings with you! While none of these pieces will come as a big surprise, there are some new things I’ve discovered and I think you’ll love them too. Today’s post is about 7 ways to master winter style in the city, while feeling warm and on trend.
Last month, I was in London for a ten day work trip, and the weather was a mixed bag of rain, clouds and a little sunshine. While trend shopping in Notting Hill and sipping tea in Selfridges, I realized that everywhere I looked, all the cool girls were wearing a “uniform.” Yep, they all had some version of this outfit: a long wool coat, denim, black boots, a scarf and a posh designer handbag (everything from YSL to Chanel to Gucci). This gave me inspiration for winter wear, so read on for ideas on what to wear when it’s raining, cloudy, or just plain cold. I hope you find a thing or two you love!

Love classic denim with black and camel, and these Anine Bing coats are so good
Faded denim is a favorite wash that works any time of year, and this Mother pair and patch pocket ones are perfect
Black boots are staples of winter style – both a knee boot and Chelsea style boot are essentials
#1 All-black Base Layer
Left: Black sweater | Frame jeans | SW boots | Fur vest, similar | Right: Anine Bing coat | Prada hat | Burberry scarf | Turtleneck | Vince pants | Bottega bag | Loafers | Boots
A simple black base layer is the key to every stylish winter outfit. Depending on your style you can either go for a legging and black top like this all-time favorite lululemon long sleeve. You’ll wear it all the time, I promise! With leggings, if you live in a colder climate, consider a fleece lined legging. Amazon has this pair that has almost 45k reviews! For something a little more polished, this Vince turtleneck and pant are both amazing!
#2 Everyone should have a puffer coat!
Aritzia puffer (green sold out) | Naghedi tote | Mother Insider jeans | GG Ball Star sneakers | Stripe turtleneck sweater
When the weather gets cold, there’s nothing more stylish (and practical) then a puffer coat! Any style works, long or short. Everyone loves an Aritzia puffer (on sale now!), and of course you can’t go wrong with this “Amazon coat,” which has over 27k mostly positive reviews! If you’re up for a splurge, Moncler would be my pick. Look at this or this – both are amazing. And for an affordable version, check out this Quince one – it looks almost identical and the quality is so good!
#3 Longer Wool Coat
Black wool coat | Stripe sweater | Mother jeans | Naghedi tote | SW boots
The great thing about these stylish, versatile coats is that you can wear them over literally any outfit. Go casual with jeans, a t-shirt or a hoodie and some cool sneakers. Or, go upscale with a dress and boots, or with a cashmere sweater and faux leather pants or flared denim. A classic color like camel, gray or black is also a good idea. This is classic winter style, and everyone needs one! I love the Dylan coat by Anine Bing.
#4 Cozy, Chunky Scarves and winter accessories
#5 Straight leg jeans
If there’s one jean that works any time of year with pretty much any shoe …. this is the style to get
#6 Socks and Practical Boots
Varley puffer, sold out | Green sweater | Leggings | Varley socks | Rain boots, similar
A legging/comfy sock and boot combo works with many different sweaters, jackets and coats. Socks and comfort boots are a trending winter style this season, and they’re the key pieces to get this look. I prefer black boots for a leg lengthening look, but if you’re on the taller side, try any neutral color for another option.
#7 Stylish Travel Outfits
Left: Moncler puffer | White tee | Mother Dazzler | Samba sneakers | Foundrae necklace | Gucci bucket bag | Tote | Beis luggage
Right: Varley jacket and matching pant | P448 Monza sneaker | Phone case | Beis Mini
Having a go-to travel outfit is the key to looking stylish on long travel days. I usually go for leggings, sneakers and a cozy hoodie, as well as a cashmere wrap. Most times, I bring this Nordstrom cashmere/silk scarf that I’ve had for years — it’s a good one. For luggage, either the Beis or Monos suitcases are my personal favorites. For a weekend travel bag, this Beis Mini Weekender one is the best. I’ve taken it on countless trips, and it holds way more than you would think.
