As of Late, August 2023 Edition

As of late, August 2023 edition

Hi everyone! Welcome to my quarterly series … “as of late.”  I decided to switch things up a bit here on the blog, so every few months I’ll be sharing what’s happening in the world of design, food, travel, fashion and … life! It’s as if you’re sitting around with girlfriends having a glass of wine, and one of them has the inside scoop 😉 The last installment was in April, which you can read here.

I’ll be covering some fun topics, along with any other interesting discoveries that might come up. For example, there’s what’s in my shopping bag, things that have caught my eye as of late (there’s always something), and exciting interior and exterior design projects. There are also food and cocktail recipes, travel plans and ideas, current trends, and of course, street style inspo 🌟 So … lots of great stuff!

Since fashion is what we talk most about here on So Susie, that won’t change at all. But “as of late” will be a fun way for me to share my thoughts on some other interests you all seem to enjoy. I hope you like it 🥂 Cheers!

P.S. If you’re new around here and want to stay up to date on all things stylish, and the bound-to-sell-out items we ALL need, then subscribe here and never miss a post! You can also check out my Instagram Reels videos here.

What has caught my eye as of late

August is birthday month, and while I’m not exactly excited about turning a year older (!!), I’m grateful to be on this earth ✨ Things will be a little different for me this year since it’s the first full year without my dad. His birthday was the day before mine. I really do miss him every single day.

Next week, my husband and I are celebrating our birthdays in Napa with our daughter and her bf. I’m looking forward to some family time and, of course, lots of eating and wine tasting! I’ll share my packing list next week in case you need some fall outfit inspo.

On September 5-7, I’m hosting the So Susie Wine Event in McMinnville and I couldn’t be more excited! I’ll be doing a couple of fashion presentations which I’ll also share on IG stories and here on the blog. Hope you’ll follow along 🤍

ME+EM: the UK brand that’s worth a look!

ME+EM is a UK brand that has been on my radar for some time. (I first spotted it on my favorite website, Sheerluxe, which is also a London-based fashion website.) When I tried on the black knit pants in the style board, I felt quite slim (not sure why other than they’re SUPER flattering). The pretty floral dress I’m wearing in the photo above was perfect for a business luncheon I attended recently. To see more stylish pieces I found for you and read the blog post, click here. It’s worth a read!

My latest Reels videos: Spanx

One of my favorite things to do is get in my closet and make outfit combos to show you on my Instagram Reels. Several years ago, my stylish friend who worked at Nordstrom suggested I try the Spanx flare pants. I must admit, I was skeptical at first, but the minute I tried them on I knew she was right!

Fast forward to now, and Spanx is a brand I highly recommend. The fit is spot on, and sizes are available in petites, regular and tall, which is unusual in the industry. Click here to watch my recent IG reels and click here to shop it! One of my favorite outfits is this matching top and pants in the new charcoal heather color.

Use my code: SUSIEXSPANX and get 10% off your order. Every little bit helps 😉

P.S. The lilac Frame blouse is on sale. Don’t wait because it won’t last!

Pre-fall 2023 Capsule Wardrobe & the best red jacket

Left: Red jacket | Veronica Beard skirt | Sandals | Right: Details here

One of my favorite things to do is create capsule wardrobes for you. Often, I end up purchasing from my own style boards! Since tweed jackets are a favorite fall trend, I decided to add this gorgeous red one by Veronica Beard. I’ll be wearing it with this denim skirt (and definitely jeans as well) as we transition our way into fall. Click here to see my recent Pre-Fall Capsule board post (the one above is an edited version). Capsule wardrobes are a great way to see the essentials you need, and pick up a few extra pieces you just love 🌟

Travel updates

My summer vacation was such a dreamy trip, I’m still thinking about it! As you know, I love to find great boutique hotels and share them with you. The Number Sixteen in London and Soho House Paris were both stylish, well-appointed and perfect for people-watching and getting street style inspo. The Carlton Cannes, on the other hand, was decidedly NOT a boutique hotel 😂 Nonetheless, it was one of the most incredible places I’ve ever stayed, with impeccable service, excellent cocktails and food, and the best beach club I’ve ever been to. If you’re ever in the south of France, it’s a must-see.

The Vibrant Food Scene in Portland

Left: Falafel, Kann | Fireside PDX | Right: The bar at Kann, Instagram

Portland is definitely a foodie town, and we just landed the title of America’s Best New Restaurant, a truly impressive award for one of our own! Kann is deserving of every accolade it gets. I took my little team for an early dinner, and we were astounded at the food, service and overall vibe. Getting on the waitlist is a bit of a chore, but if you’re coming to town, it’s worth the effort!

Another fave if you’re coming to Portland is The Fireside, which is on one of our most popular streets (NW 23rd). They have a beautiful outdoor seating area, and the food and drinks are consistently good. The cocktail above is one of their original signatures, and it’s called Backyard Grillin’. It’s a well-balanced combination of Olmeca Altos Reposado Tequila, Bahnez Mezcal, Sfumato Amaro and lemon. Perfect for a summer (or any) night!
