Make sure you own these basics …

and most importantly, make sure they’re updated.  We all have so much black in our closets, and for good reason.  It’s the backbone of a complete wardrobe. But if don’t have one of these pieces, without a doubt you’ll be missing out on stylish outfits no matter what season it is. So stock up!

I first spotted this stylish blogger (below) a few months ago, and knew right away I must recreate her outfit. And while I already had this favorite tee (I wrote about it here), the skirt is what actually makes the outfit. It’s so simple, and can be worn from work to drinks to dinner. It’s surprising how many compliments I’ve received!  And we all like that, don’t we?

So here’s how to stay stylish!

Make sure you own a great black t-shirt

Favorites include any ATM, Rag and Bone, or Vince t-shirt. Since black doesn’t get dirty as easily as white, I think it’s ok to spend a little bit more.  This tee is the one I’ve worn many times – sometimes a few days in a row!  It’s worth every penny.

Then make sure you have a black blouse or two

If you’ve been in “Room 3” with me, you’ve probably heard me say how important it is.  We all look SO GOOD in a beautiful black blouse, whether you’re wearing it with leather pants or your favorite denim.  I love this shirt style by Vince, and this Paige style is different enough that you could own it too!!

Onto the skirt update

There are many interesting skirts this season, and by adding a simple wrap skirt or a silky bias cut skirt to your wardrobe, you will have an instant update!  Read more on skirts here.

Add some faux leather

This is the trend I’m most excited about this fall.  (Well, there are probably a few other trends I love too, but faux leather is pretty cool.)  I am definitely adding a skirt like this one, and maybe even a jacket!  A faux leather piece literally makes any outfit look updated and stylish.

And a great black blazer

This is a staple piece, and since we’re seeing blazers everywhere right now, make sure you have a good one.  Of course I still love the Veronica Beard Dickey jacket, but now there’s this one I’m really excited about!  I wrote about it here. I feel confident saying EVERYONE should own a great black blazer!
