My Looks Feel Current With These 7 Items

We talk a lot about basics here on So Susie, and recently many of you have enjoyed the capsule wardrobes I’ve created. It’s an easy way to make many stylish outfits by combining pared down pieces. And, it’s a great place to start when building a good solid wardrobe, which helps you easily get dressed day in and day out. But … it can be a little boring šŸ˜‰ So, it’s necessary to add the fun, trendier pieces to help keep your outfits (and closets) interesting!

I had the pleasure of working with Who What Wear’s Senior Editor Bobby Schuessler on this article, which features 7 items that help keep my looks current. I’ve been reading Who What Wear for over 10 years to get the latest in fashion trends, street style, and pro tips from some of the top editors in the business. So, you can imagine how honored I am when asked for “advice” from WWW! And, their commitment to the inclusion of women over 40 is admirable, which makes me even more proud to be affiliated with them.

Today’s post is about 7 items we can all wear that will keep your outfits stylish and current, plus my own brand new picks. In case you missed the recent capsule wardrobe posts, click here to see the summer one, and click here to see the pre-fall one. There are many style boards in both posts that will hopefully give you some good ideas. And, if you’re interested in reading part 2 about taking your wardrobes to the next level, just click here. 1. Statement Tops With Special Sleeves

A cool statement top is really all you need with denim to make many different looks. I’m still loving puff sleeves, and this Vince topĀ has a small cutout detail in the back that adds interest. It’s super easy to wear with faded denim ā€¦ talk about a simple but elevated outfit!

2. Wide-Leg Trousers

Black denim jacket | Tank | Aritzia pants | Schutz sandals | Tote | Diamond layer necklace

Longer flowy pants are a great substitute for jeans right now. They’re perfect for summer, and if you pairĀ them with a simple tank and cool accessories, you’ll look stylish and current. These flowy pants by Reformation are getting written up left and right, and so are these by Aritzia.

3. Black Knit Dresses

I’ve been seeing strapless black knit dresses on Instagram, so I decided to try one. Talk about versatile, and so chic! For current looks, try wearing one with a blazer over your shoulders, or simply with a denim jacket. This one by Norma Kamali is the one that everyone on Instagram is wearing right now!

4. Special Clutches

Special clutches are all the rage, and talk about an easy way to elevate your outfits any time of year! This metallic clutch is a favorite.

5. Preppy Pieces

Outdoor Voices dress | Alexander McQueen sneakers | Loewe tote | Gucci sunglasses

My summer vibe is anything that’s tennis inspired! These summer prep-inspired pieces are everywhere thanks to tennis skirts, graphic sweatshirts, and cool accessories like baseball hats and canvas totes. I love it all.

6. Short Denim Jackets

Denim jackets are always in style, but this year, many of them are a little shorter. They look better over dresses since they typically hit at the flattering part of your waist. I’ve added a couple this year, and they’ve elevated all my dresses from last year.

7. Pretty White Tops

Every summer, I look for a new white top. White tops always looks great, and they’re perfect with linen pants, faded denim ā€¦ or even shorts and heels!
