7 Denim Trends That’ll Level Up Your Closet

Denim is always a hot topic around here! This is totally understandable since many great outfits revolve around this wardrobe staple. It’s important to get it right, because it’s the starting point of every stylish denim outfit you put together, no matter the occasion. I get many many questions about denim — daily, in fact. This includes everything from what’s the right length, to how do I cut my own jeans, to can I wear flare jeans when I’m 5′1, to how do I cuff them … the list goes on and on. Read more in this recent post.

My history with denim

My love of denim goes waaaay back. In the early 2000s as a Nordstrom stylist, I worked in the denim department. This gave me firsthand knowledge about everything related to denim, and an incredible opportunity to become very knowledgeable about styles, materials and brands. These days, it’s still my favorite category of clothing to work with, and I try to stay very current and “in the know.” Also, I have a few trusted resources that give me incredible insider info. The best part is I get to share it with all of you!

Today’s post is about the 7 denim trends that’ll level up your closet. While denim is almost always trending, this season there are other key pieces that will help switch up all your outfits. Besides the latest jean trend that everyone is wearing, there are also super stylish denim skirts, new denim jackets, and even denim accessories that I’m certain you’ll love. Keep reading to see which styles are current, how to wear them, and why keeping your denim updated is so so important!

#1 Wide-leg denim

Talk about an update, this is the single best way to give your wardrobe a refresh. This Spring, wide leg jeans are the reigning silhouette! Try adding a pair in a light wash, similar to the ones above. My favorite fits include the Paige Annessa 31″, Frame Le Slim Palazzo and Mother Roller. I like styling them with slimmer tops, and slightly oversized third pieces, like this jacket. If you live in a warmer climate, look at these featherweight jeans by Rag & Bone. They’re so good, and everyone loves them!

#2 Skirts

Skirts are another category that have been trending the past couple of seasons. They’re a nice alternative to jeans when the weather warms up, and they’re easy to style. Try pairing them with a slingback for a sophisticated look that’s unexpected. Of course, sandals (and even sneakers) work too! While I love the longer midi styles, this season I’m seeing shorter versions everywhere.

#3 Denim Trends: Dresses

Left: Denim dress | Naghedi tote | Havaiana flip flops | Right: Denim dress | Raffia bag | Gucci slides | Bracelet

Denim dresses are everywhere this year! I really like this longer style by Veronica Beard, and this shorter one by Rails. Find one you love, and I’m certain you’ll wear it for the next several months.

#4 Denim jackets

Susie: Rag & Bone Miramar denim jacket | Vince dress, similar | Right: AG denim jacket | Frame dress | Basket bag | Sam Edelman sandals | Bracelet

Denim jackets are a wardrobe staple that I believe everyone should own! They’re perfect over your favorite dresses, and you’ll can keep them for years. Right now, updated styles to consider include belted styles like this, slightly oversized versions like this, and a white or écru wash like this.

#5 Lighter color denim

Susie: Theory bomber | Theory top | Paige Laurel Canyon | Sandals | Right: Farm Rio top | Frame trench | Mother Roller, petites here | Sandals | Bag | Earrings

I think everyone should refresh their white or écru denim … every year if possible! It’s better to just purchase one or two styles and wear them all the time. This season, I’m seeing newer styles like the wide-leg ones I mentioned above. Trust me, they’re worth the money because they make many spring and summer outfits, and you can wear them into the fall depending on where you live!

#6 Cuffed denim

Let’s talk about thick, single fold, cuffed jeans. While you can do this at home, consider pre-cuffed styles, like best sellers by AGOLDE. Cuffed jeans are super cool and edgy, and if you’re taller than me (which pretty much everyone is 😂) go for it!!
