The Top 3 Reasons You Should Update Your Denim

Denim is always a hot topic around here, which is understandable since any great outfit revolves around this wardrobe staple. It’s important to get right, because it’s the starting point of every stylish outfit you put together, no matter the occasion! I get many many questions about denim … daily. This includes everything from what’s the right length, to how do I cut my own jeans, to can I wear flare jeans when I’m 5′ 1″, to how do I cuff them … and the list goes on and on.

My love of denim goes waaaay back. In the early 2000s as a Nordstrom stylist, I worked in the denim department. This gave me firsthand knowledge about everything related to denim, and an incredible opportunity to become very knowledgeable about styles, materials and brands. These days, it’s still my favorite category of clothing to work with, and I try to stay very current and “in the know.” Also, I have a few trusted resources that give me incredible insider info. The best part is I get to share it with all of you!

Today’s post is about the top 3 reasons you should update your denim this spring. Right now, you’ll find the best selection of denim, as well as everything else you need to make the cutest spring outfits. Keep reading to see which styles are trending, how to wear them, and the reasons why keeping your denim updated is so so important!

P.S. ICYMI, I shared this video yesterday on how to cut and fray your denim. The Gingher scissors are the best, and you’ll wonder how you lived without them!

Here are the top 3 reasons why you should update your denim

#1 – Current styles of denim in your wardrobe will help you stay on-trend and look stylish. Who doesn’t want that?

#2 – New denim refreshes all your outfits

#3 – Denim is the starting piece of almost every outfit. Once you find your best fit, add a neutral shoe and then every top or jacket works. Trust me on this one!

How many jeans do you really need?

This varies from person to person and one’s budget, but here’s what I recommend

Left: $59 utility jacket | Rag & Bone Peyton | Valentino bag | Middle: Black blazer | White jeans | YSL tote | Right: Rails top, similar | Frame Mini boot jeans

On a budget: start with one white, one light or medium blue, and one black. Spend a little more and wear them ALL the time

Have a little more to spend: add an écru pair (so chic) and add a second style (like a flare or wide-leg crop) to the ones above

You love denim and the sky’s the limit: lucky you! Start adding the most current styles, like wide-leg jeans, and flare jeans in several washes including black, gray, white, shades of blue, etc.

Disclaimer: Most of us have too many jeans, which actually makes it harder to get dressed. So, buy carefully — less is more — and make sure you have them altered if needed in order to get the correct length!!

Ready to move on from skinnies? Try a slim, straight leg jean

J.Crew linen blazer | Frame top | Paige Cindy | Slingbacks | Basket bag | Michele watch | Sunglasses

This is the place to start if you love your skinnies and aren’t ready to part with them! Did you know that most slim, straight leg jeans are only a tiny bit wider at the bottom? Ohi, the specialist at Mother Denim, told me that the Dazzler (which is their straight leg style) is the same fit as their skinny (the Looker) from the waist to the knee. You heard it here first 😂

Favorite fits: AG Mari, Mother Dazzler, Mother Tomcat, Frame Le High Straight, Paige Cindy

Wide-leg jeans are everywhere right now

Yesterday, I popped into Nordstrom, and asked my good friend what’s selling in denim. Her answer without hesitation: everyone is asking for wider leg and long length jeans! She also casually mentioned that no one is asking for skinnies 🤔 This is one of the best reasons to update your denim. And, talk about cool, leg lengthening, and current! THIS is the jean to try for Spring 2024 (if you haven’t already).

Favorite fits: Paige Anessa , Frame Le Slim Palazzo, Rag & Bone Logan, Mother Hustler Roller

Cropped wide-leg jeans: AG Saige, Paige Anessa,

Boot-cut and flare jeans

Vince cardigan | Frame navy blouse | Mother flare jeans | Sandals | Bottega bag | Bracelet

I find this style of denim to be the most flattering on everyone because they make your legs look longer. In fact, it’s my go-to jean of choice for spring. They’re really versatile, and any style of shoe works, including sneakers, flat sandals, strappy sandals and pointy toe slingbacks.

Favorite fits: Mother Weekender, Frame Le High Flare (try the Le Pixie line if you’re petite), and Paige Laurel Canyon

Cropped flare jeans: Frame Mini-Boot, Mother Insider, Mother Hustler, Paige Claudine and AG Farrah bootcut

Shorts, shorts, shorts

Rails jacket | Rag & Bone tee | Paige Dani | AGOLDE Parker | Prada sneaker | Naghedi tote

Every spring and summer, denim shorts start arriving. Find faded styles in a looser fit for the best look this summer. The AGOLDE Parker denim short is the top seller, along with the Paige Dani. Buy them early for longer wearing time!

Favorite fits: AGOLDE Parker and Paige Dani

Give your white jeans a refresh!

If you find a pair of white jeans you love, then you’ll wear them all the time. They look classic throughout spring, all summer and into fall. And if you’re like me and really “wear” them, then most likely you’ll need a refresh the following year 😉 I can’t imagine a a wardrobe without white jeans, and this year there are many different styles to choose from. Check out my faves below.

Favorite fits: Mother Hustler, Mother Hustler Roller, AGOLDE Dame, and Paige Claudine

Do you need écru denim in addition to white?
