7 pieces to get you through this Winter!

… what to wear when it’s raining, cloudy, or just plain cold

Since winter officially starts in a few days, I decided to review my closet to see which items I’ll be wearing on repeat. Of course, this required a bit of “blog research” 😉 and I’m excited to share my findings with you! While none of these pieces will come as a big surprise, there are some brand new things I’ve discovered and I think you’ll love them too. Today’s post is about the 7 pieces that will get you through winter while feeling stylish and warm!

Several weeks ago, I was in London for a ten day work trip, and the weather was a mixed bag of rain, clouds and even a little sunshine. While trend shopping in Notting Hill and sipping tea in Selfridges, I realized that everywhere I looked, all the cool girls were wearing a “uniform!” Yep, they all had some version of this outfit: a long wool coat, denim, black boots, a scarf and a posh designer handbag (everything from YSL to Chanel to Gucci). This gave me inspiration for this winter; so read on for ideas on what to wear when it’s raining, cloudy, or just plain cold. I hope you find a thing or two you love!

P.S. I love sharing outfits with you on Instagram. It’s so much fun to create different combinations, especially since there are no weather parameters! But, since I live in the rainy PNW, my everyday outfits are usually more practical. Last week, in this Reels video, I shared my real life outfit — what to wear when it’s raining!

Black coat | Ivory cardigan | Bottega bag | Rosette sweatshirt | Packabale coat | Jeans | Black boot | Burberry scarf | Hat | Chloe tote | White Chelsea boot

#1 All-black base layer

Varley puffer | Hold tight top | Gucci scarf | Align legging | Rain boot | YSL tote | Foundrae charm | Gigi Clozeau necklace

STYLIST TIP: What to wear when it’s raining — start here! 🌧️

A simple black base layer is the key to this casual outfit. Try adding a sock like these cool Varley ones, and a comfortable boot similar to the one I’m wearing above. When it comes to a black top, this long sleeved version is SO good, I recommend everyone try it in both black and white. You’ll wear it all the time, I promise! With leggings, if you live in a colder climate, consider a fleece lined legging – Amazon has this pair  that has almost 30k reviews!  For a non-legging option, check out this Varley pant — it’s amazing, and you can get the same look above.

#2 The Amazon coat with 27K reviews that you’ll need this winter

Orolay coat | Sh*t That I Knit Hat | Frame denim | Aquatalia weatherproof boot

This coat by Oralay, known as the “Amazon coat,” has over 27k mostly positive reviews! I’ve had my eye on it for quite some time, but was worried it would be too much “coat” for me. Well, I was pleasantly surprised when the one above arrived in the mail. It’s definitely puffy, but it’s so cozy, and my husband keeps commenting on how much he likes how it looks on me 😊 Give it a try, it’s a good one!

#3 Everyone should own a hoodie

Faux leather blazer | Grey hoodie

I’m starting to sound like a broken record (!!) but it took me a while to locate the right hoodies this year, and I finally did. They’re perfect for layering (read this blog post), and they’re so comfy you won’t want to take them off. While it looks like I dress up all the time, in all honesty I’m usually in a hoodie these days. It’s my uniform 🙂 I LOVE this new one I just found at Neiman Marcus, and this Jenni Kayne one is amazing. I’m sorry the images below aren’t pretty, but here are some other options.

#4 Socks and practical boots

Varley puffer | Green sweater | Leggings | Varley socks | Rain boots, similar

I wore this outfit combo last week to a fun cookie decorating day with my sweet family. It was perfect for the farm and they were warm and comfy. When I was making this Reels video, I realized that a legging/comfy sock and boot combo works with so many different sweaters, jackets and coats. Socks and comfort boots are trending this season, and they’re the key pieces to get this look. I prefer black boots for a leg lengthening look but if you’re on the taller side, try any neutral color for another option. Look at these new Vince boots I just found and look at these polo socks that Em has on her wish list, which she wrote about in her recent Em’s Picks blog post.

#5 A stylish travel essentials

Left: Spanx jumpsuit (love!) | Middle: Varley sweater | Naghedi tote | Right: Rag & Bone blazer | Mother Dazzler jeans | Loafers

The essentials: Naghedi tote | Beis Weekender bag, small size here | Amazon cosmetic case | Monos luggage | Black scarf

Having a go-to travel outfit is the key to looking stylish on long travel days. I usually go for leggings, sneakers and a cozy hoodie (no surprise!), as well as a cashmere wrap. In the winter, I usually take this one I picked up at Bloomingdales. Other times, I bring this Nordstrom cashmere/silk one that I’ve had for years — it’s a good one. For luggage, either the Beis or Monos suitcases are my personal favorites. For a weekend travel bag, this Beis one is the best. I’ve taken it on countless trips, and it holds way more than you would think.

#6 Longer wool coat

Aritzia Stedman coat | Mother jeans | Loeffler Randall boots | Paris sweater

The great thing about these stylish, versatile coats is that you can wear them over literally any outfit. Go casual with jeans, a t-shirt or a hoodie and some cool sneakers, or upscale with a dress and boots, or with a cashmere sweater and faux leather pants or flared denim. A classic color like camel, gray or black is also a good idea. This is a classic winter staple, and everyone needs one! I love the Dylan coat by Anine Bing.

#7 Cozy, chunky scarves
