This outfit-making trick always works … trust me!

We have a lot of new followers around here, both on Instagram and on the blog, so I decided it might be a good time to re-introduce myself. WOW, I’m overwhelmed at all the thoughtful messages and at getting to know all of YOU! Thank you so much 💕 In case you missed it, click here to watch.

When I was in the dressing room at Nordstrom (affectionately known as “Room 3”), I took A LOT of time to carefully curate outfits and make sure they were perfectly put together before showing them to my clients. We often took photos, because the selected pieces were always ones that made many good outfit combos. Clients would always ask me this question: when investing in jackets or blazers, what do I wear with them? Well, over the years, I discovered an outfit-making trick that always works: just match your top and bottom! For example, wearing white/white, écru/écru, black/black, or even blue/blue is a great place to start before you add different coats, jackets and blazers. Trust me on this one!

Brand new today! Here’s a video sharing four different jackets around a black/black combo. Pro-tip: Try and add a little pattern through a jacket or accessories to keep the combo interesting. Today’s post is about stylish, pre-spring outfits that all work around these combinations. Since jackets and blazers are the finishing piece of almost every outfit, I’m including some brand new picks I’ve just discovered. I hope you get a little outfit inspo for your own wardrobes and start prepping for the best spring looks ever!

First, start with the basics!

We all have a lot of black pieces, so I won’t cover that here (except the black blouse above is a personal favorite). The trickier pieces are the écru and white ones. So, here are some faves that work every time! The Halogen $49 tank is bra-friendly, and the black and soft white (works with écru denim) are wardrobe staples. I also love the Anine Bing smoking girl graphic tee — it adds a little pattern, and is another option to wear with écru denim. For white staples, this Michael Stars tank and the ATM tee are amazing, and so are the white Mother Hustler, Mother Insider and Frame Le High Straight. Trust me, these basics will make loads of outfits!

Add your favorite jackets

One can never have too many jackets!! They’re the finishing piece to every outfit. Whether you’re talking a lightweight cardigan, utility jacket or a blazer, these are the best pieces to invest in.

Add a go-with-everything shoe

I can’t say enough about neutral shoes! They end up being your go-to’s, trust me on this one. Invest in several: low-heel, a wedge, a boot, sandal — you can’t go wrong!

Ecru top | Ecru jean | Denim jacket | Sandals | Tory Burch bag | Scarf | Necklace

And cool accessories

When you’re wearing solid pieces as your base, adding cool accessories is the style trick that helps your outfits look more interesting. Pieces like printed scarves, woven totes, and special jewelry go a long way toward elevating your outfits.
