15 Forever Pieces Worth Investing in This Fall

When it comes to curating a stylish, modern wardrobe, knowing where to invest makes all the difference. Over many years working as a Nordstrom Personal Stylist and Buyer, I learned which key pieces truly stand the test of time. And, at the end of the day, I still believe in the same principle: less is more! Keep reading to see the elevated staples I recommend to all my friends & clients again and again.

Here Are the 15 “Forever” Pieces

#1 Of-the-moment skirt – Skirts are having a major moment right now, and either a knee length or midi-style are the most versatile. Wear them with pointy toe shoes, dressy sandals and knee boots. Try a silky skirt like this and this. Also spotted this gorgeous knee length Vince blue one. Other options include his best-selling Tuckernuck, this J.Crew and this Veronica Beard that comes with a matching top.

#2 Always stylish trench coat – I recommend a more relaxed style of trench – it feels more stylish, and it’s better for layering over cozy sweaters or hoodies. Love this new J.Crew one, and it’s available in petite sizes too. For a more flowy style, this is the one I’ve worn over and over again. Aritzia has a great option (look here), and this cult-favorite from Sezane is another good one (love the check cuff). I just received the Amazon version, and it’s so so good!

#3 Classic Cashmere – A relaxed cashmere sweater (like this Quince one or this Tuckernuck one) is a piece that will last you for years. I take one on every trip no matter what time of year it is, and it looks super stylish if you casually throw it over your shoulders. Consider buying two in the same color — wear one, and wrap the other one over your shoulders — so chic! If you prefer a bit nicer quality, you can’t go wrong with this oversized Vince crew or this best-selling funnel neck style.

#4 Here’s a short-sleeved version that’s quite versatile. Any of these will look stylish paired with faux leather pants, or even a faux leather skirt. A few others I recommend include this Veronica Beard cardigan and this Nordstrom cashmere hoodie. For the best info on cashmere care, look at the Quince website.

#5 Carry-all tote – Everyone should own a good tote — they’re super handy. Whether you’re traveling, running errands, going to fitness classes or working, having a go-to bag that holds everything you need is key. Consider this Naghedi tote, and it also comes with a cute matching pouch. This Burberry one is a workhorse, and is very durable. For a little pattern, consider a Goyard, and for an affordable version that’s also super stylish, look at Madewell — either this or this.

#6 Wide leg trousers – Another classic piece that looks chic dressed up or down. Right now, style them with a looser button-up and a really cool belt. Some of my top recommendations include this Aritzia Effortless trouser, this J.Crew pair and this Frame knit one. Don’t forget the viral Lodge pants — everyone loves them!

#7 Everyday button-up – A classic button-up like this favorite belongs in everyone’s closets! Throw a cashmere one over your shoulders for extra warmth, and don’t forget a belt. Look at this ruched sleeve one by Brochu Walker — I’ve been wearing the white and brown nonstop. Also love this Comme Si one after seeing Emma Grede wearing it tucked into a shirt. For something more basic, look at this Frank & Eileen white one.

#8 Classic straight leg denim – This year, to create a stylish fall outfit, consider slimmer, straight leg jeans — either full length or ankle length. They’ll go with every style of shoe, and you’ll wear them with blouses, your favorite blazers, long coats … the list goes on! The styles that work for most everyone include this AGOLDE Harper, Frame Vertical, Paige Stevie and Mother Kick-it. When it comes to washes, I prefer a medium blue, washed black or dark rinse — all really versatile.

#9 Boots – Since we’re at the beginning of a season, making sure you have a boot or two that go with everything is key! If you are looking for an update that will last several seasons, an elongated toe is the way to go — look at this and this for great options. If you love a pointy toe style, look at this lower heel Stuart Weitzman pair or this Favorite Daughter pair. Since knee boots are trending, some favorites include this everyday low heel boot style, these Sam Edelmans (ankle version is here), and this classic with a heel.

#10 Versatile handbag – When you want to create a great day-to-night outfit, a bag that works for both is one of the best investments you can make. Last year, I splurged on this Bottega bag, and it’s still one of my favorite pieces. This one on Amazon is really good for a dupe! For more affordable options, Veronica Beard has some great ones – look at this and this. Finally Quince is also so good – my sister in law has this suede one and it’s amazing!

#11 Silk blouse – This Frame Gillian silk blouse is hands down a favorite in my own rotation — I’ve had it for four years! There’s something about a beautiful silk blouse that always reads elegant and sophisticated. Vince is another favorite brand – and you’ll have this one for years to come.

#12 Loafers – A classic loafer is a great addition to any wardrobe, and this season every brand is making a version of the YSL Le Loafer. If you are up for a splurge, look at this and this. For less expensive versions look at this Zara pair, this Vince one and this Dolce Vita one.

#13 Well-fitting blazer – I can’t think of a better investment piece than a classic, well-fitting blazer. The Veronica Beard Miller Dickey jacket is still a favorite, and there’s a new updated version here. For something a little cleaner and slightly oversized, check out this one from Aritzia. It’s well-priced and gives you a current look. Try it over a dress or with your favorite jeans. Also, for affordable options, definitely check out Zara and Madewell.

#14 Beautiful jewelry and watches – Having your own special pieces of jewelry is helpful when it comes to completing your outfits. If you’re up for a splurge, Zoe Chicco diamond necklaces are absolutely gorgeous – and you can see some of my favorites here. #15 Classic wool coat – Begin the season with a new classic wool coat in any color you fall in love with! You’ll be surprised how versatile a fun color is. Of course, a classic camel or black is always a good idea. Wear over dresses, with your favorite denim, or even with a tonal pair of trousers. We can always enjoy a beautiful Max Mara coat, but of course, there are more affordable options. Look at Fleurette, Reiss and Sam Edelman. Me and Emily both own Aritzia coats and love.
