The six shoe styles absolutely everyone needs!

Over the years, I’ve found that shoes can make — or break — an outfit. And, believe it or not, if you own some or all of these key shoe styles, you’ll always be covered when putting together your look! I actually LOVE shoes, and in my personal stylist days I could often be found running back and forth to the shoe department to find different options for my clients. This season I’m happy to report that there are many fun options available. From the party shoes everyone is talking about to bright pretty colors to cool sneakers, the choices are over the top — and Nordstrom.com has a great selection at the moment. Keep reading to see the six shoe styles absolutely everyone needs!

Which shoe styles should you add to your wardrobes so you have solid choices when getting dressed? Well, a neutral shoe is the best place to start, and I believe you should own several pairs — believe me, you’ll wear them all. In fact, over half my shoe collection is neutral! It might sound a bit excessive, but I promise they work with everything. From there, add all the fun ones: sneakers, party shoes, espadrilles, sandals … see my favorites below. They’re all on trend, super wearable, and the finishing touch to every spring outfit. There’s also some new style board inspo, as well as the inside scoop on the coolest shoes to own for the coming season!

Neutral shoes: the backbone of everyone’s closets

Based on first-hand experiences of my own and of helping women in the dressing room, neutral shoes are leg-lengthening and they almost disappear … this allows your eyes to focus on the outfit. Even more importantly, if you want to look taller, like I do, neutral shoes are KEY. Nude pumps are classics — I’m on my second pair of these Pradas, and they always look sophisticated. For a simple sandal, these Schutz ones have been my go-to’s for the last couple of seasons. They’re comfortable, the heel height is ideal, and they work with both dresses and denim. A strappy sandal is perfect for both dresses and jeans. I like and own this simple one by Vince Camuto, and the newly updated, slightly square-ish toe is modern and cool. The trick is to find a neutral one that compliments your skin tone.

The color that makes every single outfit soooo sophisticated

A caramel colored shoe and a coordinating bag (or belt) will take every single outfit up several notches. I’ve written about this at length several times, and I believe caramel is a really important color to own (in addition to the neutrals above). I love this YSL sandals, and this one is really similar for less. There’s also this best-selling one by Dolce Vita, and this one, and this one too. Love!

Espadrilles

Denim jacket | Black dress | Bomber jacket | Gucci espadrilles | Straw tote | Paris tote | Earrings

Every year, a style comes along that I fall in love with (or, in this case, fall in love with again). I can’t think of a more perfect summer shoe: it comes in a variety of styles, and looks good with dresses, shorts and jeans! This new Gucci espadrille is so cute, and so is this one by Veronica Beard. I’ve rounded up my favorites below.

Jellies

Oversized shirt | Denim | YSL tote | Stuart Weitzman jellies | Stripe cardigan | Loewe bag and Etro scarf | Gucci sandals

Believe it or not, these rubber sandals are surprisingly comfortable! I own the Gucci slides from last year and wore them all the time. They add a little height, and this year the colors are really fun. Stuart Weitzman expanded their color selection on the best-selling Goldie style, and the Valentino ones are perfect for any vacation. The sparkly studs go beautifully with everything — the options are endless. Try them!

Strappy sandals

Cardigan | White jeans | YSL bag | Strappy sandals | Dress | Bottega clutch | Valentino earrings | Utility jacket

I recently purchased these strappy sandals by Veronica Beard, and they’re so so pretty! I’ve done several photo shoots wearing them, and they go with everything from white denim to trousers to black pants. I have an older pair of gold strappies, and they look good with every outfit. I love this pair by Veronica Beard, and this pair by Vince Camuto. Feminine, pretty and timeless!

Summer slides

Let’s get practical! Slides are everyone’s go-to sandal in the summer. You can wear them with every summer dress:  t-shirt styles, pretty florals and, of course, shirt dresses. Super practical, comfy, and many good choices!
