6 Important Fall Basics That Should Absolutely Be on Your Radar
The vibe in NYC is so great right now! We had an amazing trip, and there’s definitely a hint of fall in the air. I don’t know about you, but cozy sweaters and soup nights are starting to sound pretty good 🙂 This time of year, I always recommend heading into your closets and giving them a good clean out. Go through your most-worn pieces from last year, and set aside anything you didn’t wear (more on this later). From there, make a little list of what might be missing and what you want more of. When it comes to building an effortless wardrobe, the secret is focusing on pieces that are elevated, current, and incredibly versatile. Our hotel in New York was popping, and every stylish person that caught my eye was wearing a pretty simple outfit. Basically, it was a classic straight leg jean, flats, a sweater over the shoulders and a really cool bag. It’s a really good reminder that outfits don’t need to be complicated, but the pieces do need to be elevated and current. #1 Relaxed Trench
Look for a longer length, slightly relaxed trench that you can layer over sweaters and cashmere hoodies, and still feel really comfortable. You’ll look chic and be warm at the same time! I noticed that Aritzia has an excellent selection when I wandered into the NYC store, and they really do a great job with colors and different styles. I’ve also worn this flowy trench on repeat, and it’s perfect for in-between seasons or if you live in a milder climate. My top picks are below.

#2 Button-up Shirts
This is the number one item I saw on almost everyone. Whether it was paired with jeans (tucked in) or with a skirt, there’s just something very classic about a cool button-up. But … it needs to be a little loose and slightly oversized. I like standing the collar up and unbuttoning the bottom two buttons. I recently purchased this Brochu Walker Pia shirt in white and java, and wore both of them several times in New York. I also got this gray lightweight wool one, and the cuff detail is super stylish.

#3 Classic Straight-leg Jeans
Ankle jeans pair perfectly with loafers now, loafers and socks later, and of course, sneakers and boots as well. The washes I’d recommend include a medium blue, a dark rinse wash, and a blackish/grayish wash that always looks good this time of year. I’ve been wearing this one on repeat, and forgot how nice it is to have a slimmer jean that’s an ankle length! It’s just so flattering.

#4 Simple Cashmere Sweater
If I could only pick one color for a cashmere sweater, it would be a light gray. Emily and I both showed up at the airport wearing our gray sweaters over our shoulders (they double as a scarf on the plane). Stylish options include a crew or v-neck that’s slightly oversized, or a hoodie (zip or pullover) that is the perfect layering piece for any jacket. See below for my top picks.

#5 Leather Jacket: a Fall Must-Have
If you find the right leather jacket that’s casual but can also go dressy, and that’s relaxed but not too relaxed, I’m certain it’s the one piece that will make your outfits a little cooler. I saw someone wearing a burgundy one (similar to this) with these burgundy sneakers, and she looked amazing … and comfortable!

#6 Drawstring or Elastic Waist Pants
These aren’t going anywhere, and talk about the perfect pant you can wear all seasons! Once the weather changes, add socks and sneakers, your favorite loafers, and even a low heeled pointy toe shoe, sandal or boot.
