7 Winter Coat Trends About to be Everywhere

It’s officially coat season, and this time of year always reminds me of my days as a Nordstrom Buyer. When I was fresh out of college, I landed my first official job at Nordstrom as a coat buyer. Two days later, it was off to New York City to preview coats and jackets for the fall season. It was a very exciting time; I got to experience New York in the 90s, and truly enjoyed every minute of it! That was the start of a lifelong love affair with coats … and I still love them to this day. A great coat or jacket is the best investment piece you can make for your wardrobe — hands down!

Remember, everyone sees your coat. Keep in mind, when you’re out and about town running errands, attending sporting events, going out to dinner – all anyone sees is your outerwear. Sometimes whatever’s underneath doesn’t really matter! Your coats should be stylish and practical, and don’t be afraid to purchase several. Trust me, you’ll wear them all.

Today’s post is about 7 Winter Coat Trends that are about to be everywhere. I’m showing you everything from the luxury detail that makes your coat look more expensive, to the classic trench, to an everyday peacoat. Remember, the earlier you buy it, the more wearing time you’ll get. And, since we’re at the beginning of the season, now is the time to add a few new ones to your collection. Keep reading to see new style board inspo, and the investment pieces I highly recommend this winter. Stay warm! 🤍

Loving all the fur details this season, whether it’s just a touch like on this sweater jacket, or all out like this jacket

Scarf details are popular right now, like on this coat by Reiss

It’s all about the accessories! From animal print shoes to bold earrings to a cool bag, these are the pieces that make an outfit

#1 Scarf & Cape Coats

This might be my favorite trend of the season! There is something about an scarf or cape style coat that looks elegant and sophisticated. See below for some favorites you might want to consider — they’re super stylish right now.

Reiss scarf coat | Farm Rio sweater | Coated jeans | Veronica Beard boots | Earrings | Clutch

Other options

For a Toteme-inspired wrap coat for a much lower price, look at this Quince one and this longer style at Nordstrom

This J.Crew one just arrived, and it’s amazing

For something more unique, I spotted this new Veronica Beard plaid jacket with a scarf detail

Also love this luxe heather brown one

#2 Fur Trim Coats

Fur details are “in” this season, and you can find great options at all price points — so luxe!

L’Agence fur trim coat | Ivory sleeveless turtleneck | Veronica Beard satin pants | Sandals | Clutch | Earrings

Other options

Just received this Tuckernuck coat and this Alice & Olivia wrap sweater (gifted) — both are incredible

The L’Agence one above stopped me in my tracks (!!)

Also spotted this navy one, and this one that comes with a removable collar and cuffs

#3 Red Coats

If you want to brighten up your coat collection, adding a touch of red will do the trick

Reiss coat | Alice & Olivia skirt | Slingbacks | Clutch | Earrings | Ivory sweater

Other options

Saw this shorter length red coat by Alex Mill and added it to my shopping cart. Love the black buttons

For a scarf coat version, look at this new one by Mint Velvet

#4 Modern Wool Coats

A classic wool coat is always in style, and relaxed styles like this and this look great with jeans and boots or loafers

Mango coat | Boden cardigan | Mother jeans | SW boots | Gold earrings | Green bag

Other options

If you like a wrap style, look at this gray one and this chic brown one

For splurge coats, consider the brand Fleurette, and of course anything by Max Mara, like this

Double-face wool is such a luxe detail — look at this J.Crew coat, and this Mango one too

#5 Faux Fur

There are many great faux fur jackets this season, and you can wear them casually or dressed up

Cinq a Sept Faux fur jacket | Cream sweater | Slip skirt | Sandals | Bag | Earrings

Picked up this Tuckernuck faux fur jacket when I was in NYC a few weeks ago, and I love it

Thought this Farm Rio is kind of fun

Here’s the shorter brown one I used on the collage board above

#6 Plaid

Talk about a great way to switch up your coat collection! Plaid coats like this new Veronica Beard are surprisingly versatile

J.Crew plaid utility coat | Gray turtleneck | Mother jeans | Anine Bing boots | Veronica Beard bag | Valentino earrings | Eyeglasses

Other options

Spotted this gorgeous neutral one by Fleurette

For a classic plaid coat, look at this one by Vince

For a short version, check out this bright plaid one and this Veronica Beard plaid

#7 Trench Coats

Trench coats are always in style, and adding a more relaxed style instantly updates your outfits

Other options

Love this Clyde trench from Sezane, especially the plaid cuffs

For a cropped version, look at this one by Reformation

Also, this is a good one that’s available in several colors
