What to Wear When It’s Cold and You Want to Look Put Together

… what to wear when it’s raining, cloudy, or just plain cold

Now that winter is officially here, I’ve been taking a closer look at my wardrobe to see which pieces I’ll be wearing when the weather turns cold. Of course, this has required a bit of “blog research” 😉 and I’m excited to share my findings with you! While none of these items will come as a surprise, there are a few new favorites in the mix, and I think you’ll love them too.

Recently, I was in London for a work trip, and the weather was was a mixed bag of rain, clouds and a little sunshine. While trend shopping in Chelsea and sipping tea in Selfridges, one thing stood out: so many stylish women were wearing some version of the same “uniform!”  This included a great wool coat, denim, black boots, a big scarf, and a beautiful bag. It was simple, practical, and chic — and worked in every kind of winter weather. That’s the inspiration behind today’s post: easy outfit ideas for when it’s cold and you still want to look put together, whether you’re in the city or closer to home.

Cold weather basics like a knit turtleneck or midi style dress are stylish and practical

This is the year of the knee boot, and these affordable ones by Sam Edelman are so good – they look designer

Accessories make every outfit, and I love this Gucci bag and this cozy Burberry scarf – both statement pieces you’ll have for years to come

#1 All-black Base Layer

Left: Leather jacket, similar | Vince trousers | Turtleneck | Right:  Anine Bing coat | Prada hat | Burberry scarf | Turtleneck Vince pants | Bottega bag | Loafers Boots

A simple black base layer is the key to every stylish winter outfit. Depending on your style you can either go for a legging and black top like this all-time favorite lululemon long sleeve. You’ll wear it all the time, I promise! With leggings, if you live in a colder climate, consider a fleece lined legging. Amazon has this pair that has almost 45k reviews! For something a little more polished, this Vince turtleneck and pant are both amazing!

#2 Straight-leg Jeans

If there’s one jean that works any time of year with pretty much any shoe, this is the style to get

#3 Coats & Sweaters

Left: Aritzia coat | Stripe sweater | Right: Reiss coat | Frame jeans | Sweater

The great thing about these stylish, versatile coats is that you can wear them over literally any outfit – click here to see my recent coat post. Go casual with jeans, a t-shirt or a hoodie and some cool sneakers. Or, go upscale with a dress and boots, or with a cashmere sweater and faux leather pants or flared denim. A classic color like camel, gray or black is also a good idea. This is classic winter style, and everyone needs one! I love the Dylan coat by Anine Bing.

#4 Quilted Coats

Perfect for milder weather, quilted coats are practical and stylish!

#5 Socks & Practical Boots

Varley puffer, similar | Alpine sweater | Leggings | Varley socks | Rain boots, similar

A legging/comfy sock and boot combo works with many different sweaters, jackets and coats. Socks and comfort boots are a trending winter style this season, and they’re the key pieces you need to get this cold-weather look. I prefer black boots for a leg lengthening look, but if you’re on the taller side, try any neutral color for another option. Click here to see the new Alpine collection by Varley – it looks so good.

#6 Cozy, Chunky Scarves and Winter Accessories

#7 A Go-To Travel Outfit

Left: Brown trench | Cashmere hoodie | Rag & Bone pants | Right: Right: Varley jacket and matching pant | P448 Monza sneaker | Phone case | Beis Mini

Having a go-to travel outfit on hand is the key to looking stylish on long travel days. I usually go for comfy pants like the Rag & Bone Miramar ones, sneakers and a cozy hoodie. For luggage, either the Beis or Monos suitcases are my personal favorites. For a weekend travel bag, this Beis Mini Weekender one is the best. I’ve taken it on countless trips, and it holds way more than you would think.
