Stylish Must-Haves If You’re Traveling This Winter

Recently my daughter and I took a fun little trip to Paris and London, and we had the best time together! We carefully planned our outfits, and tried really hard to pack efficiently. But, at the end of the day, we both overpacked 🤣 When we arrived at our hotel, we continued our ritual of getting settled right away by unpacking and putting everything away. We had a good laugh when we realized so many of our things were the same, including Zara scarf sweaters & ponchos (that take up half your suitcase), knee boots and loafers, and so much more.

This whole adventure reminded me that style isn’t about age. In fact, we get to wear whatever we want, whenever we want! Of course, most of us don’t want to dress like our daughters. But we do want to be stylish and look and feel our best. And, even if we end up with similar items in our closets, we end up styling them differently. My friend Bobby Schuessler, the Senior Editor from Who What Wear happened to see our Instagram stories, and he wanted to know more about which items we wore on repeat in Paris.

Today’s article, “I’m a Former Nordstrom Buyer, and My Daughter Is 30 Years Younger—We Both Wore These 6 Items on a Trip to Paris” is about the similar pieces we both packed. Keep reading to get a list of must-haves that might inspire your upcoming travel outfits, or just looks in general. You’ll see how we wore similar items, but styled them differently. Oh, and we wore a similar travel outfit as well: a trench coat with loose, drawstring pants. Enjoy!

#1 Long Coats

Between trench coats and long wool coats (we each brought both), these were the most-worn items on our trip. Finding a slightly oversized style is key in order to pair it with sweaters when the weather is cold. Often, we added a sweater over our shoulders as well, just to stay extra warm. At the moment, a long coat is a must-have.

#2 Gray Sweaters

Yes, a gray sweater is kind of basic, but we both have a classic crew that we wear all the time—whether we’re on vacation or at home. Wear your light gray sweater layered over a white tee, or tied over your shoulders … it pretty much goes with everything!

#3 Zara Ponchos and Scarf Sweaters/Coats

Quince scarf coat | Frame leather pants | Anine Bing boots | Bottega bag

We both walked the streets of Paris wearing a Zara poncho and a scarf sweater or scarf coat. And funny enough, I spotted at least five women wearing the exact same thing while strolling the Saint Germain area! They’re warm, stylish, and really affordable. We love them.

#4 Loafers

Em: Aritzia coat | Leggings | Boots | Earrings | Susie: Aritzia coat | Cashmere hoodie | Mother Hustler Jeans, petites here | Gucci loafers, similar | Phone case

This was our go-to shoe on the trip, even when walking all day. Comfortable and stylish, our loafers actually felt better than sneakers! I went with a classic mule loafer, while Em likes a slightly chunkier style.

#5 Oversized Blazers

LouLou Saison blazer | Frame leather pants | Prada pumps | Bottega bag | Necklaces: here & here

We both brought looser, slightly oversize blazers. Em wore hers during the day with leggings and knee boots, and I wore mine at night, dressed up with Frame leather pants. They’re also perfect with dresses or slip skirts.

#6 Crossbody Bags

Em: Jacket, similar here | Jeans | SneakersSusie: J.Crew coat | Vince sweater | Vince pants | Chanel loafers, similar

Every single person wandering the beautiful neighborhoods of Paris was wearing a chic crossbody bag, so we fit right in. We both packed black ones and wore them every single day. They’re practical, and stylish too.
