Stylist tip: Don’t overpack! Here’s how ✈️

Lately, everyone appears to be making travel plans — and it’s so exciting! The idea of not overpacking seems to be a common goal for all of us. It’s tricky, and I admit, and I’m not the best when it comes to packing for myself. I like to have options, even though there are always things I never end up wearing! Next month, our family is heading to sunny SoCal to visit Joshua Tree National Park for a few days, and then to Palm Springs. My older son informed me he’ll be planning some hikes, my husband will likely organize a pickleball tournament, my youngest son will drag us thrift shopping, and I’ll make everyone eat all three meals by the pool for one whole day!

In today’s post, I’m sharing a 6 day packing list which can easily be adapted no matter where you’re going. About six months ago, I started packing around the activities I would be doing while on vacation. For example, shopping and blog research during the day, pool time, exercising, and going out to dinner. This approach helped me pack more efficiently — and surprisingly, I didn’t overpack! Another tip that many efficient packers implement is to stick to one or two color palettes, so I gave it a try. The colors I chose included denim, white, black, tan and a couple of bright pink things for a little color. Vacation inspo

Day 1: Travel outfit + essential travel items

A cashmere wrap or simple scarf like this favorite black one works no matter where you’re going

Packing cubes are the best way to organize your suitcase, and these compressions ones work for everyone

I always take my jewelry in my carry on, and this travel case is compact and easy to pack

Comfy pants like Vuori joggers or these washable crepe pants and a white tee are staples

Day 2: Lunch outfits

Comfortable dresses are worth every penny in my book! They work with denim jackets, cardigans over your shoulders, flat sandals or heeled sandals … the list goes on. They can be dressed up or down, and you’ll always feel polished and put together. These are my go-to’s all summer long. Last summer, I wore this Mother dress everywhere! For now, I have my eye on this Veronica Beard striped dress and this new Cinq à Sept one. Both so easy, and wearable for everyday.


Day 3: By the pool!

J.Crew has the best swim shop, and I love both of the one-pieces above. They’re high quality and well-priced, and you can’t go wrong with any style! Also, their coverups are cute and stylish — I just purchased this green striped one. For a staple, look at this oversized shirt coverup — I’m going on 5 years of owning mine! This year, I noticed a longer version as well. Finally, packing a straw bag sounds difficult, but it’s not if you stuff it with all your swim things and lay it sideways in your suitcase. You don’t need to overpack swimsuits, just make sure they mix and match with your coverups.


Day 4: Dinner dress idea

Packing one black dress just in case is a great idea, just in case, and it hardly takes up any space. I can never decide which one though, so this time I brought this Norma Kamali strapless and this one by Anthropologie. Dress them up or down depending on the event and the accessories you brought along. Day 5: Pickleball

Pickleball is definitely all the rage right now. But whether you play pickleball, walk, run, tennis — it doesn’t matter. Don’t overpack here — a couple of sets of workout clothes you love and feel good in will do. Who knows, this might make you want to exercise 😉 Lately I’ve been loving anything related to tennis or pickleball,  like this cute bag and jewelry case. I also LOVE the Lululemon belt bag and take it on every trip.


Day 6: Don’t overpack so you can go shopping 🙌🏼

If it isn’t too hot out and I’m having a shopping day, I’ll wear jeans. It makes it easier if you want to try on jackets or tops. If you’re wearing a dress, sometimes it’s harder to try some things on. But wearing jeans when shopping is just a stylist tip; if you love dresses, go for it!
