How to build a winter capsule wardrobe!
Now is the perfect time to review your essentials and get your closet organized for winter! A solid wardrobe foundation makes getting dressed easy and effortless, and also helps you be prepared for any occasion. This is why I’m sharing my recommendations on how to build a NEW warm winter capsule wardrobe. This wardrobe should be comprised of sophisticated, elevated, versatile pieces. When these pieces are combined, they make stylish outfits for all your winter events!
A while back, I wrote a post called “Are Capsule Wardrobes Even Worth It?” where I explored the concept that capsule wardrobes can be a little ‘unexciting’ unless you add in some fun stuff. But, the starting point is actually the most important one: you have to make sure you have the correct basic pieces and build a great wardrobe. Hopefully this post with help you with that — I want you to have an amazing assortment of stylish pieces you’ll enjoy wearing this winter.
One of my favorite things to do is find brand new pieces that make the coolest outfits! For many years, this was my work in “Room 3” at Nordstrom, and it was truly a dream job. But things changed … this little blog started taking off, and somehow I was able to give “dressing room experiences” online to many people across the country. I’m still counting my blessings, since making outfits is my happy place ☺️
Today’s post features the warm winter capsule wardrobe I’ve created for you. I believe in purchasing carefully and thoughtfully pieces that can be worn many different ways. So, all these items are proven, meaning they’re best-selling, well-fitting and worth every penny. Keep this post for reference, and enjoy getting dressed, staying warm and looking stylish this winter! ❄️

Susie’s NEW Warm Winter Capsule Wardrobe
Trust me, it’s always really hard to narrow this down, but the warm weather pieces below are ones I carefully selected for this capsule. Most of them are brand new, and I’m loving the touches of green. You really have to start with the basics in order to create an amazing wardrobe. Once you have that part covered, the best way to keep things fresh and updated is by adding new, stylish and maybe even colorful accessories and your outfits will be complete!
Pro Tip: Substitute the splurge items with similar, more affordable versions. You’ll create the same look 😉

All-important jackets
One of the main items of every great wardrobe
Row 1: Varley jacket | Anine Bing coat | Denim jacket | Green plaid jacket | Vest | Faux leather jacket | Wrap coat
These stylish jackets will get you through most any social situation. For example, a camel coat looks amazing with denim, but it’s also goes well with many dresses. This quilted jacket is super cute, and I love Anine Bing’s Dylan coat in camel and black. For more casual jackets, this denim hoodie keeps selling out, but it’s back in stock, so don’t wait! Tweed is also trending this season — how cute is this vest? It also comes in a jacket style which you can see here. Finally, warm shirt jackets are perfect for winter, so look at this new green plaid one.
Layering pieces
You only need a few to complete your outfits
Row 2: Stripe t-shirt | Turtleneck | Blue shirt | Anine Bing sweatshirt | Cardigan | Stripe turtleneck | Varley 1/2 zip
Sometimes people ask me how many white t-shirts I own. The answer is TWO!! A few good layering pieces will cover you for all occasions. For example, I love a turtleneck sweater, and this one has been a good one. An oversized poplin shirt is a year-around staple, and this best-selling one is back. Right now striped sweaters are everywhere, and this one is right on trend. For an affordable version, look at this one. Finally, Varley is a favorite brand, and this 1/2 zip works under every oversized coat, like the black and camel ones above.
Well-fitting bottoms
The starting point of every outfit
Row 3: Frame ecru denim | Camel trouser | Mother denim | Grey denim | Coated denim | Jogger | Milly dress | Rails sweater dress
Ideally, owning three pairs of jeans (white or écru, faded denim and black) will cover you in the wardrobe department. I adore this faded Mother style, and they’re in my shopping cart! The Vuori jogger is the perfect weekend option, and trousers are the staple bottom to own. These pleat pants by Favorite Daughter keep selling out, and I plan on trying them myself. For dresses, this Milly green one is brand new, and a perfect way to liven up your wardrobe. For cozier styles, a sweater dress is perfect, like this new longer style by Rails.
Stylish accessories
The key to completing your outfits
Row 4: Gucci bag | Burberry scarf | Card case | Nike hat | Gucci wallet | Sunglasses | Earrings | Bottega Veneta bag
Fun, stylish accessories elevate all your outfits, and I recommend investing in the best bag you can. For example, the Gucci bucket bag has been one of my best purchases. Baseball hats work all year around, and I love this new green Nike one. For simple gold earrings, the shape on this pair is super cool. Burberry scarves are timeless for a reason — they go with everything. And finally, sunglasses always add a glamorous touch, and having one pair (like these) you feel really good in works wonders!
Shoes, shoes, shoes!
Not much to say, except who doesn’t love new shoes?
Row 5: New Balance sneaker | Gucci flat | Rover boot| Gold sandal | L’Agence sandal | Toteme boot | Gucci loafer
Neutral shoes go with everything, so they’re usually my suggestion for all your outfits. A great nude flat just kind of disappears and makes your legs go on forever, and ballet flats are the shoe to own right now. A sandal like this favorite by Cult Gaia is perfect for dressier outfits, and so is this L’Agence one that’s finally back in stock. For an everyday bootie, I still love the Rover in the camel color. And finally, New Balance sneakers are good ones to own, and they’re under $100. Grab a pair when you find your size — they’re selling quickly!
