Vacation packing list: 7 items that belong on every trip!

Lately, everyone appears to be making travel plans — and it’s so exciting! The idea of not overpacking seems to be a common goal for all of us. It’s tricky, and I admit, I’m not the best when it comes to packing for myself. I like to have options, even though there are always things I never end up wearing! Next month our family will be going on what might be our last spring break vacation together 😢 This time we’re heading to sunny Scottsdale to stay at the Scott Resort, and I can hardly wait 🙂 My older son informed me he’ll be planning some hikes, my husband will likely organize a pickleball tournament, my youngest son will drag us thrift shopping, and I’ll make everyone eat all three meals by the pool for one whole day!

Today’s post is about 7 essentials that are useful on every trip, starting with a great travel bag like this and a cashmere wrap like the one I’m wearing above. I’ve found other essentials that always work, like travel minis and this amazing cosmetics bag — and it’s under $20. Keep reading to see my vacation packing list: 7 items that belong on every trip, and of course some specific things I’m eyeing for our trip to Arizona. There are some incredible new finds, check them out!

Neutral sandals like the YSL ones are great for the pool, and also with dresses during the day and out for dinner

J.Crew has the best swim shop, and I love this new convertible sarong

In case pickleball or tennis is on your vacation agenda, look at this tennis dress

This pretty-shade-of-green dress caught my eye

Fun, easy dresses for day or night

Dresses hardly take up any room and are super easy to pack. When you’re going somewhere sunny and the temperature is 70 degrees or above, they’re a safe bet! It’s a one and done vacation outfit, and a knit one like this $49 style can be worn many different ways. Just this morning I spotted my favorite Vince slip dress, now available in new colors (here and here). Find several you love, I’m positive you’ll wear them all the time.

Athletic wear for hiking and tennis

I try and do some exercise most days while on vacation — usually a walk, or these days, pickleball. And if I have cute things to wear, I find it way more motivating! Between the pickle ball craze and the preppy/tennis vibe seen on all the fashion girls, there are some pretty cute pieces. Look at Tuckernuck for cute tennis items, or Tory Sport, and Club & Court is an all-time favorite — so good!

Swimwear and coverups

Coverups are the key to a sunny vacation since most of the time it’s the first thing people see. I love this shirt style from J.Crew because it works with every swimsuit, and it feels elevated in a simple kind of way. I also picked up this striped one recently — so cute, and one like this or this does double duty as a happy hour dress!

Evening outfits for cooler nights

I’m always cold … and then hot 😂, so I like having a couple of options for cooler evenings. I usually throw in a pair of jeans, usually white or denim, and a fun top or two that can be dressed up. If I pack correctly, the cashmere wrap that I wore on the plane also works for an extra layer. At least one extra layer, just in case, is always a smart vacation trick 🙂

Sandals

Packing an easy flat one like this or this works poolside and out for happy hour. If you want a little more height, I love this espadrille and this best-selling sandal that’s my personal all-time favorite!

Travel minis

A hidden little gem at Nordstrom, travel minis are the perfect way to stock your cosmetic bag. Look for eye makeup remover, eye cream and SPF cream. Even my favorite Giorgio Armani foundation has a travel size option! For fragrance (because who doesn’t want to smell good on vacation?), I like these by Tom Ford — and, bonus — it’s an inexpensive way to try a new fragrance. Or, just go to the cosmetics counter and ask for a perfume sample!
