Gucci Denim jacket
5 ways to style the basic you already own!
This weekend, I collaborated with my “Nordstrom 6” friends to share how to style denim jackets. Every week we’re styling something different on Instagram, and I must say it’s pushing my creativity to an all-time high! And it’s all in an effort to keep things interesting for you 😉 To see some new outfit combos, read the post here, and make sure to swipe left so you can see the videos with all the pieces below.
I can’t imagine a wardrobe without a denim jacket! Having several jackets will help change things up so you have many great outfits for months to come. They’re seasonless, versatile, and work with almost everything in our closets! I’ve collected mine over the years, and consistently wear them over and over again. Keep reading for a little street style inspo and outfit details!
Also, some of you have may have heard me talking about the #Summer5 on Instagram. What is it? Well, when you subscribe to the blog, you’ll get exclusive style boards with 15 ideas on how to put the #Summer5 all together. If you’re already a subscriber, the link came in today’s email. I hope you enjoy it!

The all -important denim jacket
Levi’s black denim jacket | Staud ‘Shirley” bag | Gucci scarf
Find one or two jackets you love and wear them ALL THE TIME! I think ideally we should own at least one shades of blue, a black or washed black style, and of course white for spring. And if you have extra love for them (like I do), then throw in the pink one! This Madewell style is one you’ll wear on repeat (it runs a little small). You’ll love this L’Agence one, and this pink style is in my shopping bag!
#1 Denim jacket and a white Summer dress
Theory dress | Marc Fisher sandals | Poppy Finch necklace | Bony Levy necklace
A good white dress will last several seasons – if you can keep it white 😉 I know it’s a little tricky, but talk about a classic piece that rarely goes out of style! Add a black or denim jacket and switch out your shoes, and it will be one of the most versatile pieces you own.
#2 Try a Summer skirt
Casual skirts are a nice change for Summer. Try pairing one with a knotted t-shirt or a tie-front top like this one by Madewell. I’m in love with the Anthropologie skirt I wore in yesterday’s video. It comes in extended sizes (petites included) and has a breezy side slit, making it an easy summer staple. I’ve also had my eye on this Veronica Beard skirt, and this silky Vince style is a deal! Then finish it off with a … denim jacket of course:)
#3 Stick to the basics
Dressing room selfie in the Everlane store, Feb 2020 – Black cashmere tee | Gucci sunnies | Cheeky denim in bone
There is something very elegant about the simple pairing of black and ivory together. In this case, I’m referring to the simple black cashmere tee and the bone color straight leg jean. These are both from Everlane, and both are very reasonably priced. I also like this Mother ecru jean, and this ATM black tee. Throw on a black denim jacket and your favorite black sunglasses, and I promise you’ll feel glamorous!!
#4 Tiered dresses are everywhere
Tiered dresses are everywhere lately. I’ve seen them in all lengths; short, midi and maxi. Choose one that’s flattering, which will vary depending on your height. Since I’m 5’1″, I opted for this Anthropologie style that’s available in petite sizing. At first I wasn’t sure about it, because it’s not overly slimming — but the fam weighed in (at my request) and all gave it a high rating approval. You’ll wear it ALL summer long! Throw a denim jacket over your shoulder, and you’ll be prepared for cooler summer nights (size down, it runs big).
#5 A graphic tee always works
In yesterday’s styling session, I went with my new Anine Bing tee, black Mother Brand ‘Dazzler’ jeans (it was rainy here in Portland), and I added my favorite red Gucci sandal. After the photos, I switched into these mules to wear the rest of the day! Look here and here for Anine Bing tees. Other cool graphic tees are here.
