These New Items Help Me Stay On-Trend!

I love working on articles with Who What Wear, and you can imagine how honored I am when asked for my “advice” on fashion and styles. Their commitment to the inclusion of women over 40 is admirable, which makes me even more proud to be affiliated with them. Recently, my friend Bobby Schuessler, the Senior Editor at WWW, asked me which items help me stay on- trend and help pull outfits together. Well, that was an easy one because I always have new pieces I’m excited about!

This year, I was lucky to travel to both London & NYC. Between shopping, people watching, and eating my way through both places, I spotted some modern trends that are wearable and easy to incorporate into our current wardrobes. Every now and then, we need to add a few pieces to our closets that help give everything else a little refresh! Today’s post is a little recap from several WWW articles. I’m including my favorite trends straight from London & NYC, and the key pieces you need to help stay on- trend for the upcoming season.

P.S. When the article first appears on WWW, the clothing picks are made by Bobby and their team. He also chooses the title. So when I recap the article, the items shared are MY picks! I hope you like them.

As a Former Nordstrom Buyer, These New Items Help Me Stay On-Trend

#1 Houndstooth patterns — spotted in NYC

Houndstooth shirt jacket | ATM t-shirt | Paige flare jeans

This season, you’ll see a houndstooth pattern on everything from cool dresses to outerwear pieces to handbags. It’s trendy and wearable, and works easily into any wardrobe.

#2 Sweaters tied over shoulders — on-trend in London

Vince dress | Sweater | Loewe tote

It might be due to the unpredictable London weather [even when I went in August], but everyone was wearing a sweater loosely tied around their shoulders, and it looked so chic. Now that it’s winter, I’m still noticing sweaters tied over coats and cardigans. I wore this one everywhere!

#3 Slingback shoes —  all over NYC

Faux leather blazer | Prada slingbacks | YSL tote | Frame natural denim

I’m seeing slingbacks everywhere, and I just can’t get enough! Pick any heel height and wear them with denim, dresses, or skirts. They’re classic but modern, and I’ll be adding a pair or two to my own shoe collection.

#4 Oversized blazers — seen in London & NYC

Open Edit blazer | Norma Kamali dress

While shopping in SoHo, I saw many stylish women wearing slightly oversized blazers over everything! So easy and chic, I’m copying this look for sure. And in London, blazers were absolutely everywhere. I noticed one very stylish girl wearing a blazer over a tighter knit dress and a baseball hat. Then, around the corner, I spotted another girl with denim and a T-shirt (and sneakers). In both cases, the blazer was slightly oversized. They looked great!

#5 Wider-Leg Denim Silhouettes: still on-trend this winter

Sequin Top | Mother Weekender | Gucci sandals | Handbag

Wider-leg denim, flare-leg styles, and baby-boot styles are everything at the moment. They’re all I want to wear right now! Flattering, easy and stylish, these new denim silhouettes help me stay on-trend. Favorite fits include Mother Weekender, Paige Genevieve and Frame Le High Flare.

#6 Loose shirting — seen in Knightsbridge, London

Citizens Of Humanity Kayla shirt | Mother denim, similar

One of the best casual looks I saw was on a cute style girl who was standing just outside our hotel. She had on an oversized shirt, loose trousers and a baseball hat. So easy!

#7 Striped Knits and trousers

Striped Sweater | Trousers | Vince shoes

Stripes are classic, but this year, a slightly oversized striped sweater (thanks to the Totême Instagram favorite) is the item that’s giving new life to all our outfits. These sweaters look great with denim, dressier pants, and skirts. Add any shoe and you’ll look stylish and on-trend! Also, every cool girl is substituting denim with relaxed trousers. They look casual and fun with sneakers, pointy-toe shoes, and t-shirts. Or try them with a tank and an oversized shirt for an of-the-moment look!

#8 Printed Scarves

AllSaints scarf, similar | J.Crew cardigan | Mother faux leather pants | SW Boots | Anine Bing t-shirt

Printed scarves are a favorite accessory. Even the most basic outfit will benefit from a little pattern—it just switches things up a bit! Look for luxurious silk scarves. They are so effortless, and add a Parisian flair to your look.

#9 Baseball hats

Rag & Bone blazer | ATM t-shirt | Mother Dazzler jeans | Baseball hat | Vince shoes | Gucci bag | Beis Weekender

I noticed this trend last fall in NYC, and thought it was over, but it’s not! Baseball hats are still very much on-trend. Everyone is still wearing them, even with nicer outfits like trousers and oversized blazers. It’s practically the uniform in the city, and it gives off a cool, youthful vibe.

#10 Still on-trend: Sneakers!

Leather jacket | Hoodie, similar | Mother Dazzler jeans | Golden Goose Ball Star sneakers

I suppose since Londoners are used to walking everywhere, it makes sense that stylish sneakers were seen there with everything from denim to trousers to dresses. It might be time to add a new pair!
