Popular Items I Tossed — And What I Swapped For Them: Part 2

Recently, I was cleaning my closet (again) and, you know how it goes, there are some things that are hard to part with! But, what I really noticed is some of my all-time favorite pieces (ones that I’ve written about over and over again) are all of a sudden not getting worn like they used to. Last month, I shared this article about some popular items I tossed, and what I’m wearing instead. Many of you really liked it, including my friend Bobby Schuessler, the Senior Shopping Director at Who What Wear (if you don’t already follow him, you should — he seriously has the best taste)!

Today’s post is about a few more things I’ve stopped wearing. I shared some of them in this recent Who What Wear article “I’m a Former Nordstrom Buyer – Sorry, I Tossed These 8 Popular Items From My Closet and Added These Trends Instead.” Please keep in mind, this is my personal opinion! For example, if you asked me directly whether to keep or toss the utility jacket for example, I’d probably say toss (or set aside) for now. After all, keeping our wardrobes current help us stay modern and relevant. That said, you should always wear what you love and makes you feel the most comfortable. 🤍

P.S. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is almost here, and if you’re excited to shop, I’ll be sharing the 10 Best Things to Buy at the Nordstrom Sale on Monday, July 13 at 6PM PST. This is my best sale post of the year, and I’ll be highlighting the pieces I think will sell out first. So, don’t miss it! I’m also working on a brand new Nordstrom Drop (with NSale picks), a beauty post, and a men’s post. In the mean time, be sure and check out my secret strategy where I share all my insider tips on how to shop the sale. Happy shopping!

Stopped Wearing: Utility Jacket

Wearing this instead: ASTR stand collar jacket – similar one here by Reformation | Paige Anessa jeans | Sandals

This was one of my favorite outfits in 2020, and for several years after, I wore this utility jacket non stop. While I still love a khaki green jacket (the color goes with everything), this particular style hasn’t been in my rotation in a couple of years. So, if I’m being honest, it’s a little dated. Instead, look for stand collar jackets like the one in the above photo, or any other lightweight, loose style — you’ll wear all the time.

Jacket options to consider: This pink check from J.Crew, this Frame one (I wear all the time), this $60 one, and this Rails one

Set Aside: Vuori Joggers

Left: Vuori joggers | Right: Denim shirt jacket, similar | Lodge pants | White tee | Flip flops

Please don’t get mad at me for saying that Vuori joggers are looking dated!! Hear me out …. I still think they’re great for working out and yoga, but when it comes to running errands and just being comfortable, there are other more stylish options available. For example, if you love the soft Vuori fabric, then look at this best-selling long length one with a wide leg. When it comes to weekend outfits, consider a drawstring pant like this one I’m wearing above. It’s more versatile, and looks up to date. Trust me here 🙂

Set Aside: Slim Straight-leg Jeans

Red Rails top | Paige Anessa | Red Savette bag

There was a time that I couldn’t imagine not wearing my favorite Mother Dazzler jeans or Mother Hustler Ankle jeans. But, this spring and summer, I haven’t worn them once! I think longer lengths are more current and recommend everyone try a pair. They’re flattering and leg lengthening (which is important if you’re 5’1″ like me). I’m not suggesting that you get rid of your favorite ankle jeans, but instead try a longer length. Below are a few suggestions.

These cool twist seam Paige Anessas, these new favorite Mother jeans, and these Frame light wash ones

Tossed: Chantelle Thongs

Left: Chantelle thongs | Right: Cosabella thongs

I love a good thong under jeans or nice pants, and believe it or not, they can be quite comfortable. But recently, I cleaned out my lingerie drawer, rounded up all the Chantelle thongs, and threw them out! After trying them on countless occasions and feeling uncomfortable every single time, I decided it was time for them to go. Tried the Cosabellas that everyone loves, and let me tell you: they are SO GOOD! Super comfortable, really soft lace, and they don’t ride up. Give these a try and let me know what you think.

Stopped Wearing: Heavy Black Shoes with Ankle Straps

Leo Lin dress | Sandals | Red Savette bag

Looking back, I don’t know why I was wearing these ankle strap sandals, because there’s nothing like an ankle strap to cut your leg in half 😂 Heavy black shoes like these just don’t work! Of course, there are exceptions — but if you want a shoe that goes with everything in your closet, look for clear straps or neutrals (that blend with your skin). You’ll be amazed at the difference.

Neutral Shoe Options: This best-selling sandal, this classic pump, and these slingbacks (my newest purchase)

Clear strap shoe options: This Schutz pair I’ve been wearing for years, this new favorite pair and this cute wedge option

Stopped Wearing: Dated Denim Jackets

Frame denim jacket | Paige Anessa jeans | Sandals

Sure, everyone should own one or two (or three) great denim jackets. But, some styles can look a little dated, especially ones with inset shoulders and super tight fitting. And, while I might not donate them (unless you’re really editing), I’d definitely scoot them off to the side, and look for something more modern. See below for some ideas.

Love this new Chloe-inspired one, this Frame fitted style, and this relaxed option. All super versatile to wear any time of year.

Set Aside: Belt Bags

Denim jacket, similar | Frame Le Slim Palazzo jeans | Naghedi tote, similar

If you ever see me out hiking, then I’ll most likely be wearing a belt bag. But anywhere else, I’ll opt for a woven tote. They’re super versatile, and work for everything, like the pool, the airplane, running errands — you get the idea. There’s this Madewell one that looks more like a designer bag. Also love Naghedi totes, and noticed a couple of new ones here and here.

Set Aside: Logo Slides

Vince tank | Vince shorts | Christopher Esber flip flops

Never in a million years did I think my Dior slides would be just sitting in my closet … but they are. I don’t feel too bad because I literally wore the sole out! Last month, when I was visiting the Dior store in Saint-Tropez, I was tempted by a new pair — but then my senses kicked in. Flip flops are all I’m wearing this season, and and so is everyone else!

Options I love: This Veronica Beard pair, these classic Tkees and these splurge Instagram favorite ones

Stopped Wearing: Long Line Cardigans

Polo cable cardigan | Lodge pant

A lot of us probably owned or still own the J.Crew Juliette cardigan — it had a good run! But now, long cardigans look a little dated. Thanks to J.Crew and Polo Ralph Lauren (and others), round neck cardigans are back. You can layer a white tee under, or even wear it alone. Some lighter weight cashmere ones look stylish buttoned all the way up, with nice trousers and a good belt. So chic!

Options I love: This polo cable one, this Quince cashmere one (size up), and of course you can’t go wrong with a classic J.Crew one

Thank you for reading, and remember: wear what you love! xx
