Denim 101: Style tips for Fall 2023

On a regular basis, I make the “rounds” and check out what’s new on all my favorite websites. And, since we’re at the beginning of a new season, there are new things daily — which is very exciting! Denim is the number one place to start and one of the top categories on So Susie. It’s also the number one topic I get questions on every single day. Let’s face it, buying denim online is HARD! And, since the correct bottom piece is the starting point of every single outfit, it’s important to make sure you have several well-fitting, current jeans.
Today’s post is Denim 101: which brands to buy, what’s trending and a few style tips that will help you prepare for Fall 2023. Plus, I’m answering several questions that I get on a daily basis — like which jeans are best for petites, what are the new trends for fall, how do I style gray denim, which is the most sliming jean … the list goes on and on — and I love it! Pro-tip: buying “best-sellers” increases your odds that you’ll find a pair you love — I’ll explain below. I hope you find post this helpful 💙

Denim 101: Straight leg jeans
Straight leg jeans are the jeans that work with everything. They’re easy to dress up or down, and they’re kind of like the next step up from a skinny jean. I prefer slimmer versions like the Paige Cindy, AG Mari, Mother Dazzler and Frame Le High Straight. They’re best-sellers, and they go with every style of shoe: sneakers, sandals. pumps, boots and strappy sandals too.

Wide-leg and flare jeans
This is the trend I’m most excited about! Wide-leg and flare jeans are flattering, leg lengthening, and look sophisticated with everything you wear. Try them with a pointy toe shoe or boot. They’re also perfect with strappy sandals or open toed mules. Whether you’re going for a wider leg style like this pair (I wore them here), or a flare jean like this one, the styling options are endless.

Black jeans
No wardrobe should be without black jeans. I wear mine several times a week (except for during the summer), and they’re slimming and always stylish. My current favorites are the Citizens Of Humanity Isola, in particular the Stormy wash, which is a faded black. I also recommend all styles from Mother in the wash “Not Guilty,” which is their classic black, no-fade wash.

Grey jeans
Grey jeans can be a little tricky to style, and depending on your budget you can either add or skip these. I like them with bright colors, or for an elevated look, any shade of camel. See this video for how I styled my Paige Claudines. I also like this Fidelity Juniper pair seen in this video.

Denim midi skirts
The hot trend of the season, denim midi skirts are everywhere. They can be tricky to style for shorter people (like me), but there’s a style for everyone. I love this one by Paige, and this slimmer (but still stretchy) one from Veronica Beard (I wore it here). I also noticed this Rag & Bone one is popular and keeps selling out.

Can I wear white jeans in the fall?
Remember you can always wear what you want, but I prefer to switch to écru in the fall. It depends on whether you live in a warm climate, where many prefer to stay with white. Come November when it starts raining here in the PNW, I actually put both white and ecru aside for a few months!
Which jeans are the most slimming?
A black wash of any kind is super slimming
How do you cut and fray your own jeans?

How should I style gray jeans?
Try gray jeans with camel, white, soft ivory, dark chocolate brown and anything bright
What are your favorite petite jeans?
I’m always looking for petite jeans by the brands I love, and Anthropologie has the most options. This includes the Paige Cindy, Paige Laurel Canyon and Paige Genevieve. I also like this slim wide-leg crop at J.Crew, as well as this J.Crew trouser. Both are available in many size options. Finally, the Frame Le Pixie is their petite line of denim, and I like the Le High Flare. I didn’t have to do one bit of hemming to this one!
What’s your favorite denim trend for fall?
I’m loving utility cargo jeans, and I just spotted this pair by Paige called Dion. It’s the same style as this stretchy gray fabric, and they’re flattering on everyone. I’ve heard from trusted sources that this AGOLDE one is good too!
