The 5 coats you must have for Fall

When I was fresh out of college AGES ago (wink), I landed my first job as a coat buyer for Nordstrom. Two days later, I was off to New York City to preview coats for the Fall season. It was a very exciting time; I got to experience New York in the 90’s, and I loved every minute of it! Of course, that was the start of a lifelong love affair with the best coats and jackets.

This is one of the MOST IMPORTANT pieces to have in our wardrobes. I always tell my friends and clients: you can never have too many! From lighter weight wool jackets (like the one I’m wearing above) to the classic trench to heavier weight coats, there are many options — both affordable and splurge. Keep in mind, when you’re out and about town, running errands, picking up kids, attending sporting events, going out to dinner – everyone sees you in your jacket, so sometimes it matters less what’s actually underneath! Make it stylish and practical if need be, and don’t be afraid to purchase several. This morning …. while writing this post, I discovered J.Crew is having a sale – 50% off outerwear today only!

P.S. If you’re new to my blog and want to stay up to date on all things stylish, subscribe here and never miss a post! As a thank you, you’ll receive my exclusive #Fall5 Style Boards — 5 Fall pieces, styled 15 different ways, only for subscribers. Join me now!

#1 Lighter weight wool sweater/jacket

If you choose a lightweight style similar to the one I’m wearing in the above photo, trust me — you’ll wear it over and over and over again. I’ve had this wool/cashmere version for four years, and it’s a classic that’s still popular. This one by Kenneth Cole is almost identical, AND it’s a fraction of the price. I love this Theory style, and it’s currently on sale at Theory for their Friends & Family Sale (I’m wearing it here). There’s also this great J.Crew sweater/blazer style available here. It’s the one Meghan Markle wore to the US Open, I wrote about it here!

#2 Puffer Coat

Moncler puffer | Pom Pom hat options | Gucci sunnies

Everyone needs a puffer! The perfect weekend coat, it’s ideal for running around town with booties and your favorite cozy sweater. Find one you love and you’ll wear it every day for months! This Moncler is super cool, and check out this one for a fraction of the price!  Bernardo is a favorite brand and so affordable. I also think this J.Crew puffer is super cute and today is 50% off!

#3 Classic wool coats

Gucci coat | Gucci bag | Mother brand denim | Prada pump

Investing in a classic wool coat that will last for years to come is a good decision. Not too heavy and not too thin, you can wear a wool coat from early fall into early spring depending on where you live. It’s no secret how much I love this Gucci coat, but there are some more affordable options too!

#4 trench coats

Stylish and unique trench coats are having a moment this fall and whether you go for something classic like this, or trendy like this houndstooth style I’m lusting over, a trench coat is perfect for most of the year.  Style it with a tee and denim, or over a dress, and you’ll look very put together!

#5 wrap coats

There’s something so elegant about a wrap coat! This style is timeless, sophisticated and really easy to wear.  It’s another style that truly stands the test of time. Max Mara, an Italian brand well known for luxury, has been producing their iconic coats since the 50’s. And luckily for us, there are some amazing other options available, inspired by this brand. If Max Mara isn’t in your budget, this Ted Baker is always a favorite, and this affordable style available in petite sizing is a great option too!
